Pūrvabhāga

ॐ श्री गुरुभ्यो नमः हरिः ॐ
शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम् ।
प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये ॥१॥
Oṁ Śrī Gurubhyō Namaḥ Hariḥ Oṁ
śuklāmbaradharaṁ viṣṇuṁ śaśivarṇaṁ chaturbhujam ।
prasannavadanaṁ dhyāyet sarvavighnōpaśāntaye ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning : (We Meditate on Śrī Viṣṇu) Who is Wearing White Clothes, Who is All-Pervading, Who is Bright in Appearance like the Moon and has Four Hands, Who is Having a Pleasing Face; One should Meditate on Him for removal of all Obstacles.

यस्य द्विरदवक्त्राद्याः पारिषद्याः परः शतम् । 
विघ्नं निघ्नन्ति सततं विष्वक्सेनं तमाश्रये ॥२॥
yasya dviradavaktrādyāḥ pāriṣadyāḥ paraḥ śatam | 
vighnaṁ nighnanti satataṁ viṣvaksenaṁ tamāśraye ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning : I seek shelter of Lord Viṣvaksena, along with his innumerable attendants {devas}, who always remove obstacles caused by various sources (from within, outside and which are beyond our control.

नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम् । 
देवीं सरस्वतीं व्यासं ततो जयमुदीरयेत् ॥ ३ ॥
nārāyaṇaṁ namaskṛtya naraṁ caiva narōttamam |
devīṁ sarasvatīṁ vyāsaṁ tatō jayamudīrayet || 3 ||

Meaning : Before reciting (Śrī Viṣṇu Sahasranāma, which is the very means of attaining victory over Saṁsāra), one should respectfully bow down to lord Nārāyaṇa and Ṛṣi Nara (the two sage-brothers who perform penance in Badarikashrama) the supermost beings, unto mother Sarasvatī (the goddess of learning), and unto sage Vyāsa (the author).

व्यासं वसिष्ठनप्तारं शक्तेः पौत्रमकल्मषम् । 
पराशरात्मजं वन्दे शुकतातं तपोनिधिम् ॥४॥
vyāsaṁ vasiṣṭhanaptāraṁ śakteḥ pautramakalmaṣam |
parāśarātmajaṁ vande śukatātaṁ tapōnidhim || 4 ||

Meaning : I salute Vyāsa, the great grandson of Vasiṣṭha, the grandson of Śakti, the immaculate son of Parāśara, the father of Śuka, the treasure of austerities.

व्यासाय विष्णुरूपाय व्यासरूपाय विष्णवे । 
नमो वै ब्रह्मनिधये वासिष्ठाय नमो नमः ॥५॥
vyāsāya viṣṇurūpāya vyāsarūpāya viṣṇave | 
namō vai brahmanidhaye vāsiṣṭhāya namō namaḥ || 5 ||

Meaning : Sage Vyāsa who is the avatar of Śrī Viṣṇu and to Śrī Viṣṇu who is in the form of sage Vyāsa. O Vasishta, the treasurer of the Knowledge of Brahman, my repeated salutations unto all of Thee again and again.

अविकाराय शुद्धाय नित्याय परमात्मने । 
सदैकरूपरूपाय विष्णवे सर्वजिष्णवे ॥ ६॥
avikārāya śuddhāya nityāya paramātmane | 
sadaikarūparūpāya viṣṇave sarvajiṣṇave || 6 ||

Meaning : (Salutations) to Lord Viṣṇu, who is the supreme self, changeless, pure, eternal, always of the same nature and victorious over everyone.

यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण जन्मसंसारबन्धनात् । 
विमुच्यते नमस्तस्मै विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे ॥७॥
yasya smaraṇamātreṇa janmasaṁsārabandhanāt | 
vimucyate namastasmai viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave || 7 ||

Meaning : (Salutations) to Śrī Viṣṇu who is the all-pervading light, by merely remembering whom one is liberated from the cycle of birth & rebirth.

ॐ नमो विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे ।
oṁ namo viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave |

Meaning : OṀ, salutations to Śrī Viṣṇu, who is the all-pervading light.

श्रीवैशम्पायन उवाच – 
श्रुत्वा धर्मानशेषेण पावनानि च सर्वशः । 
युधिष्ठिरः शान्तनवं पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत ॥ ८॥
śrī vaiśaṁpāyan uvāca
śrutvā dharmānaśeṣeṇa pāvanāni ca sarvaśaḥ | 
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ śāntanavaṁ punarevābhyabhāṣata || 8 ||

Meaning : Śrī Vaiśampāyan (disciple of sage vyāsa) said: Having heard Dharma in its entirety and also the acts that purify in all ways, Yudhiṣṭhira again addressed (Bhīṣma) the son of King Śāntanu.

श्री युधिष्ठिर उवाच –
किमेकं दैवतं लोके किं वाप्येकं परायणम् ।
स्तुवन्तः कं कमर्चन्तः प्राप्नुयुर्मानवाः शुभम् ॥ ९॥
śrī yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: 
kimekaṁ daivataṁ lōke kiṁ vāpyekaṁ parāyaṇam |
stuvantaḥ kaṁ kamarcantaḥ prāpnuyurmānavāḥ śubham || 9 ||

Meaning : Yudhishthira asked: Is there one god in this world, or is there one devotee? Whom do men attain to good by praising and worshiping?

को धर्मः सर्वधर्माणां भवतः परमो मतः ।
किं जपन्मुच्यते जन्तुर्जन्मसंसारबन्धनात् ॥ १०॥
kō dharmaḥ sarvadharmāṇāṁ bhavataḥ paramō mataḥ |
kiṁ japanmucyate janturjanmasaṁsārabandhanāt || 10 ||

Meaning : Which Dharma do you consider to be the supreme of all Dharma? By chanting what is a creature freed from the bondage of birth and death?

श्री भीष्म उवाच – 
जगत्प्रभुं देवदेवमनन्तं पुरुषोत्तमम् । 
स्तुवन् नामसहस्रेण पुरुषः सततोत्थितः ॥११॥
śrī bhīṣma uvāca: 
jagatprabhuṁ devadevamanantaṁ puruṣōttamam | 
stuvan nāmasahasreṇa puruṣaḥ satatōtthitaḥ॥11॥

Meaning : Bhishma said: Praising the Lord of the universe, the God of gods, the infinite Supreme Personality of Godhead, with a thousand names, the man ever rises.

तमेव चार्चयन्नित्यं भक्त्या पुरुषमव्ययम् । 
ध्यायन् स्तुवन् नमस्यंश्च यजमानस्तमेव च ॥१२॥
tameva cārcayannityaṁ bhaktyā puruṣamavyayam।
dhyāyan stuvan namasyaṁśca yajamānastameva ca॥12॥

Meaning : And worshiping Him alone with devotion, meditating on the inexhaustible Purusha, praising and bowing down to Him alone, and offering sacrifices to Him alone, the worshiper, the aspirant (is freed).

अनादिनिधनं विष्णुं सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम् । 
लोकाध्यक्षं स्तुवन्नित्यं सर्वदुःखातिगो भवेत् ॥१३॥
anādinidhanaṁ viṣṇuṁ sarvalokamaheśvaram।
lokādhyakṣaṁ stuvannityaṁ sarvaduḥkhātigō bhavet ॥13॥

Meaning : By praising Vishnu, the eternally immortal, the great Lord of all the worlds, the presiding deity of the worlds, one can pass beyond all sorrows.

ब्रह्मण्यं सर्वधर्मज्ञं लोकानां कीर्तिवर्धनम् । 
लोकनाथं महद्भूतं सर्वभूतभवोद्भवम् ॥१४॥
brahmaṇyaṁ sarvadharmajñaṁ lōkānāṁ kīrtivardhanam।
lōkanāthaṁ mahadbhūtaṁ sarvabhūtabhavōdhbhavam॥14॥

Meaning : He is the Brahman, the knower of all duties, the enhancer of the fame of the worlds, the Lord of the worlds, the great being, the origin of all beings.

एष मे सर्वधर्माणां धर्मोऽधिकतमो मतः । 
यद्भक्त्या पुण्डरीकाक्षं स्तवैरर्चेन्नरः सदा ॥१५॥
eṣa me sarvadharmāṇāṁ dharmōdhikatamō mataḥ।  
yadbhaktyā punḍarīkākṣaṁ stavairarcennaraḥ sadā॥15॥

Meaning : This is the Dharma which I consider to be the highest of all Dharma, that one should always worship the lotus-eyed Lord with devotion and hymns.

परमं यो महत्तेजः परमं यो महत्तपः । 
परमं यो महद्ब्रह्म परमं यः परायणम् ॥१६॥
paramaṁ yō mahattejaḥ paramaṁ yō mahattapaḥ। 
paramaṁ yō mahadbrahma paramaṁ yaḥ parāyaṇam॥16॥

Meaning : He is the supreme great light, He is the supreme great ruler. He is the supreme great Brahman (Absolute), He is the supreme highest goal.

पवित्राणां पवित्रं यो मङ्गलानां च मङ्गलम् । 
दैवतं दैवतानां च भूतानां योऽव्ययः पिता ॥१७॥
pavitrāṇāṁ pavitraṁ yō mangalānāṁ ca mangalam।
daivataṁ daivatānāṁ ca bhūtānāṁ yō’vyayaḥ pitā॥17॥

Meaning : He who is holy among the holy and auspicious among the auspicious, who is God among the gods and who is the inexhaustible Father of all beings.

यतः सर्वाणि भूतानि भवन्त्यादियुगागमे। 
यस्मिंश्च प्रलयं यान्ति पुनरेव युगक्षये॥१८॥
yataḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhavantyādiyugāgame।
yasmiṁśca pralayaṁ yānti punareva yugakṣaye॥18॥

Meaning : From Him all creatures proceed in the beginning of an age (Yuga), and in Him they are absorbed again at the end of the age (Yuga).

तस्य लोकप्रधानस्य जगन्नाथस्य भूपते । 
विष्णोर्नामसहस्रं मे श‍ृणु पापभयापहम् ॥१९॥
tasya lōkapradhānasya jagannāthasya bhūpate।
viṣṇōrnāmasahasraṁ me śruṇu pāpabhayāpaham॥19॥

Meaning : O King (Yudhishthira), listen from me the thousand names of Vishnu, the Lord of the Universe, the highest in the world; which removes sins and fear. 

यानि नामानि गौणानि विख्यातानि महात्मनः । 
ऋषिभिः परिगीतानि तानि वक्ष्यामि भूतये ॥२०॥
yāni nāmāni gauṇāni vikhyātāni mahātmanaḥ।
ṛṣibhiḥ parigītāni tāni vakṣyāmi bhūtaye॥20॥

Meaning : I shall, for the prosperity of all, recite those names of that supreme which are both secretive as well as explicitly known and which are sung by the Rishis.

ऋषिर्नाम्नां सहस्रस्य वेदव्यासो महामुनिः।
छन्दोऽनुष्टुप् तथा देवो भगवान् देवकीसुतः ॥२१॥
ṛṣirnāmnāṁ sahasrasya vedavyāsō mahāmuniḥ। 
chandōnuṣṭup tathā devō bhagavān devakīsutaḥ॥21॥

Meaning : The Rishi for this mantra consisting of thousand names of Vishnu is Vedavyasa; anushtup is the metre (chandas); the deity is Lord Krishna (the son of Devaki). 

अमृतांशूद्भवो बीजं शक्तिर्देवकिनन्दनः । 
त्रिसामा हृदयं तस्य शान्त्यर्थे विनियुज्यते ॥२२॥
amṛtāṁśūdbhavō bījaṁ śaktirdevakinandanaḥ।
trisāmā hṛdayaṁ tasya śāntyarthe viniyujyate॥22॥

Meaning : The bija of the mantra is ‘Amṛtāṃśūdbhava’ the shakti is ‘devakinandana’ the hrdaya (heart) is ‘trisāmā’; and it is to be used for offering peace.

विष्णुं जिष्णुं महाविष्णुं प्रभविष्णुं महेश्वरम् ॥ 
अनेकरूप दैत्यान्तं नमामि पुरुषोत्तमं ॥२३॥
viṣṇuṁ jiṣṇuṁ mahāviṣṇuṁ prabhaviṣṇuṁ maheśvaram। 
anekarūpa daityāntaṁ namāmi puruṣōttamaṁ॥23॥

Meaning : I salute Vishnu, the conqueror, the great Vishnu, the omnipresent Vishnu and the great Ishvara, One who takes on many forms , the one who vanquishes all demons and the supreme purusha. 


पूर्वन्यासः / Pūrvanyāsaḥ

ॐ अस्य श्री विष्णोर्दिव्यसहस्रनामस्तोत्र महामन्त्रस्य।
Oṃ asya śrī viṣṇōrdivyasahasranāmastōtra mahāmantrasya।

श्री वेदव्यासो भगवान् ऋषिः।
Śrī vēdavyāsō bhagavān ṛṣiḥ।

अनुष्टुप् छन्दः।
Anuṣṭup chandaḥ। 

श्रीमहाविष्णुः परमात्मा श्रीमन्नारायणो देवता ।
Śrīmahāviṣṇuḥ paramātmā śrīman nārāyaṇō dēvatā।
 
अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुरिति बीजम् । 
Amṛtāṁśūdbhavō bhānuriti bījam।
 
देवकीनन्दनः स्रष्टेति शक्तिः ।
Devakīnandanaḥ sraṣṭeti śaktiḥ।

उद्भवः क्षोभणोदेव इति परमो मन्त्रः ।
Udhbhavaḥ kṣōbhaṇōdeva iti paramō mantraḥa।
 
शङ्खभृन्नन्दकी चक्रीति कीलकम् । 
Śankhabhṛn-nandakī cakrīti kīlakam।

शार्ङ्गधन्वा गदाधर इति अस्त्रम् । 
Śārṅgadhanvā gadādhara iti astram। 

रथाङ्गपाणिरक्षोभ्य इति नेत्रम् ।
Rathāngapāṇirakṣōbhya iti nētram।
 
त्रिसामा सामगः सामेति कवचम् ।
Trisāmā sāmagaḥ sāmeti kavacam।
 
आनन्दं परब्रह्मेति योनिः ।
Ānandaṁ parabrah meti yōniḥ।

ऋतुः सुदर्शनः काल इति दिग्बन्धः ॥
Ṛtuḥ sudarśanaḥ kāla iti digbandhaḥ।

श्रीविश्वरूप इति ध्यानम् ।
Śrīviśvarūpa iti dhyānam। 

श्री महाविष्णु प्रीत्यर्थे सहस्रनामजपे विनियोगः॥ 
Śrī mahāviṣṇu prītyarthē sahasranāmajape viniyōgaḥa॥

Meaning : Vedavyasa said: Of this garland of mantras (constituting) the praise-song of the divine thousand names of Vishnu, The blessed Vedavyasa is the seer, Krishna, the Supreme Self, is the deity, The metre is Anushtup, “Having His source in the Self, Self-begotten” is the seed, “The son of Devaki, the Creator and Sustainer,” is the Power, “He whose glory is sung in the three types of Sama songs; the theme of such songs He who manifests Himself as the Sama Veda” is the heart, “The Bearer of the conch, He of the word, He of the discus” is the nail, “He of the Sharnga bow, the Wielder of the mace” is the weapon, “The One holding the reins of a chariot in His hands (Krishna), who is imperturbable” is the armor, “The source, the vibration, God” is the supreme mantra Let us engage ourselves in the japa of the divine thousand names of Vishnu for the purpose of pleasing Great Vishnu.


Dhyanam / ध्यानम्

ध्यानम् । 
क्षीरोदन्वत्प्रदेशे शुचिमणिविलसत्सैकते माैक्तिकानां 
मालाकॢप्तासनस्थः स्फटिकमणिनिभैर्मौक्तिकैर्मण्डिताङ्गः ।शुभ्रैरभ्रैरदभ्रैरुपरि विरचितैर्मुक्तपीयूषवर्षैः 
आनन्दी नः पुनीया-दरिनलिन-गदा-शङ्खपाणिर्मुकुन्दः ॥ १॥
Dhyānam। 
Kṣīrōdanvatpradeśe śucimaṇivilasatsaikate mauktikānāṁ, mālāklṛptāsanasthaḥ sphaṭikamaṇinibhairmauktikairmaṇḍitāṅgaḥ।
Śubhrairabhrairadabhrairupari viracitairmuktpīyūṣavarṣaiḥ,
ānandī naḥ punīyā-darinalina-gadā-śankhapāṇirmukundaḥ ॥1॥

Meaning : May that Lord Mukunda, who is happy being Himself, who has in His hands the wheel, the lotus, the mace and the conch, whose limbs are decked with pearls which are as clear as crystal, who is seated on an āsana, and embellished by laces of pearls, in the abode of the milky ocean, with the sand shining, like the pure precious stones, under a canopy of white, water-laden clouds pouring the rain of amṛta-purify us.

भूः पादौ यस्य नाभिर्वियदसुरनिलश्चन्द्रसूर्यौ च नेत्रे, कर्णावाशाः शिरोद्यौर्मुखमपि दहनो यस्य वास्तेयमब्धिः । 
अन्तःस्थं यस्य विश्वं सुर-नर-खग-गोभोगि-गन्धर्वदैत्यैः, चित्रं-रंरम्यते-तं त्रिभुवनवपुषं विष्णुमीशं नमामि ॥२॥
Bhūḥ pādau yasya nābhir-viyada-sura-nilaś-candra sūryau ca nētrē, karṇā-vāśāḥ śiro-dyaur-mukhamapi dahano yasya vāsteyamabdhiḥ। 
Antaḥsthaṁ yasya viśvaṁ sura-nara-khaga-gobhogi-gandharvadaityaiḥ, citraṁ-raṁ-ramyatē-taṁ tribhu-vana-vapuṣaṁ viṣṇu-mīśaṁ namāmi ॥2॥

Meaning : I salute the Lord Viṣṇu, who is in the form of the three worlds; the one for whom the earth is the feet, the sky is the navel, vāyu (air) is the breath, the sun and the moon are the two eyes, the quarters are the ears, the heaven is the head, fire is the mouth, the ocean is the bladder; this entire variegated universe – consisting of the devas, human beings, birds, cows, reptiles, celestials and demons – is present within Him and dancing beautifully within Him. To that Lord Vāsudeva, my salutations.

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय
शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं पद्मनाभं सुरेशं, विश्वाधारं गगनसदृशं मेघवर्णं शुभाङ्गम् । 
लक्ष्मीकान्तं कमलनयनं योगिहृद्ध्यानगम्यम्व, न्दे विष्णुं भवभयहरं सर्वलोकैकनाथम् ॥ ३॥
Oṃ namo bhagavatē vāsudēvāya 
śāntākāraṁ bhujagaśayanaṁ padmanābhaṁ surēśaṁ, viśvādhāraṁ gagana-sadṛśaṁ mēghavarṇaṁ śubhāngam।
lakṣmī-kāntaṁ kamala-nayanaṁ yogi-hṛd-dhyāna-gamyaṁ, vandē viṣṇuṁ bhava-bhaya-haraṁ sarvalokai-kanātham॥3॥

Meaning : I salute to that Lord Viṣṇu, who has a form that is calm, who with a lotus in His navel, has Ananta as His bed, who is the Lord of the devas and the support of the whole universe, who is all-pervasive like the space and dark like the clouds, whose limbs are auspicious, who is the consort of Lakṣmi, whose eyes are like the lotus petals, who is recognized through meditation, in the heart of the yogis and who removes the fear of samsara and who is the only Lord of all the lokas (worlds).

मेघश्यामं पीतकौशेयवासं श्रीवत्साङ्कं कौस्तुभोद्भासिताङ्गम् । 
पुण्योपेतं पुण्डरीकायताक्षं विष्णुं वन्दे सर्वलोकैकनाथम् ॥ ४॥
Mēgha-śyāmaṁ pīta-kauśēya-vāsaṁ, śrīvatsānkaṁ kaustu-bhōd-bhāsitāngam। 
Puṇyōpētaṁ punḍarīkāyatākṣaṁ, viṣṇuṁ vandē sarvalōkaikanātham॥4॥

Meaning : I bow before that God Vishnu, Who is the lord of all the universe, Who is black like a cloud, Who wears yellow silks, Who has the sreevatsa on him, Whose limbs shine because of Kousthubha, Who has eyes like an open lotus, And who is surrounded by the blessed always.

नमः समस्तभूतानामादिभूताय भूभृते । 
अनेकरूपरूपाय विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे ॥ ५॥
Namaḥ samasta-bhūtānām-ādibhūtāya bhūbhṛte।
Aneka-rūpa-rūpāya viṣṇave prabha-viṣṇave॥5॥

Meaning : Obeisance to Vishnu, the origin of all beings, the sustainer of the earth, the form of many forms, the originator.

सशङ्खचक्रं सकिरीटकुण्डलं सपीतवस्त्रं सरसीरुहेक्षणम् । 
सहारवक्षःस्थलशोभिकौस्तुभं नमामि विष्णुं शिरसा चतुर्भुजम् ॥ ६॥
Saśankha-cakraṁ sakirīṭa-kunḍalaṁ, sapīta-vastraṁ sarasī-ruhēkṣaṇam।
Sahāra-vakṣaḥ-sthalaśōbhi-kaustubhaṁ, namāmi viṣṇuṁ śirasā caturbhujam॥6॥

Meaning : I bow before the God Vishnu, Who has four arms, Who has a conch and wheel in his hands, Who wears a crown and ear globes, Who wears yellow silks, Who has lotus like eyes, Who shines because of Kousthbha gem worn on his garlanded chest.

छायायां पारिजातस्य हेमसिंहासनोपरि आसीनमम्बुदश्याममायताक्षमलंकृतम् । 
चन्द्राननं चतुर्बाहुं श्रीवत्साङ्कित वक्षसं रुक्मिणी सत्यभामाभ्यां सहितं कृष्णमाश्रये ॥ ७॥
Chāyā-yāṁ pāri-jātasya hēma-siṁhā-sanōpari, āsī-namaṁ-budaśyāmam-āyatākṣam-alaṁkṛtam। 
Candrānanaṁ caturbāhuṁ śrīvatsānkitavakṣasam, rukmiṇīsatyabhāmābhyāṁ sahitaṁ kṛṣṇamāśrayē॥7॥

Meaning : I seek refuge in Lord Krishna, Who is with Rukhmani and Satyabhama, Who sits on a golden throne in the shade of Parijata tree, Who is of the color of the black cloud, Who has long broad eyes, Who has a face like moon, Who has four hands, and who has a chest adorned by Sreevatsa.

ॐ विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कारो भूतभव्यभवत्प्रभुः ।
भूतकृद्भूतभृद्भावो भूतात्मा भूतभावनः ॥ १॥
Oṃ viśvaṁ viṣṇur-vaṣaṭkārō bhūta-bhavya-bhavat-prabhuḥ,
Bhūta-kṛd-bhūta-bhṛd-bhāvō bhūtātmā bhūta-bhāvanaḥ. (1)

Meaning : Aum The Universe, (the cause of the universe, Brahman, Omkara) the All-pervading, the Recipient of offerings in sacrifice (or the sacrifice itself), the Lord of the Past, Future and Present, the Creator of beings, the Sustainer of beings, the Absolute Existence, the Self of beings and the Originator (or generator of beings).

पूतात्मा परमात्मा च मुक्तानां परमा गतिः ।
अव्ययः पुरुषः साक्षी क्षेत्रज्ञोऽक्षर एव च ॥ २॥
Pūtātmā paramātmā ca muktānāṁ paramā gatiḥ,
Avyayaḥ puruṣaḥ sākṣī kṣetrajñōkṣara eva ca. (2)

Meaning : The Pure Self, the Supreme Self, the Supreme ultimate goal of the liberated, the Immutable the indweller (who exists in the body), the Direct witness to everything (with no intervening medium), the Knower of the field (the body) and the unchanging one.

योगो योगविदां नेता प्रधानपुरुषेश्वरः ।
नारसिंहवपुः श्रीमान् केशवः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥ ३॥
Yōgō yōga-vidāṁ netā pradhāna-puruṣeśvaraḥ,
Nārasiṁhavapuḥ śrīmān keśavaḥ puruṣōttamaḥ. (3)

Meaning : The Union (of the body with the Paramatma), the Leader of those who know yoga, the Lord of both prakriti (primordial Nature) and the individual self (Purusha or the jivatma), the One with the body having the features of both man and lion, the One who has Lakshmi eternally (embedded in His chest), He whose hairs are handsome (or who has under His control the trimurtis Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) and the Highest of all.

सर्वः शर्वः शिवः स्थाणुर्भूतादिर्निधिरव्ययः ।
सम्भवो भावनो भर्ता प्रभवः प्रभुरीश्वरः ॥ ४॥
Sarvaḥ śarvaḥ śivaḥ sthāṇur-bhūtādir-nidhir-avyayaḥ,
Saṁbhavō bhāvanō bhartā prabhavaḥ prabhurīśvaraḥ. (4)

Meaning : The All (as He is originator of all beings), the Withdrawer (as he withdraws all beings into Himself at the end), the Good and auspicious (being devoid of all the three gunas sattva, rajas and tamas), the Immovable (as there is no place where He does not exist and to which He can be moved), the Origin of beings, the Final resting place (to which all move at the time of the final deluge pralaya), the Unchanging resting place, manifests Himself and is hence the source of birth of His Self, Effector of the fruits of action among the individuals, Sustainer of the Universe, of superior origin (or from whom all elements originate), the most powerful One (as demonstrated through His actions) and the Mighty (with limitless might).

स्वयम्भूः शम्भुरादित्यः पुष्कराक्षो महास्वनः ।
अनादिनिधनो धाता विधाता धातुरुत्तमः ॥ ५॥
Svayaṁbhūḥ śaṁbhur-ādityaḥ puṣkarākṣō mahāsvanaḥ,
Anādi-nidhanō dhātā vidhātā dhātur-uttamaḥ. (5)

Meaning : One who is born by Himself (manifests Himself), the Bestower of happiness (to his devotees), the Golden personality in the orb of the Sun (one of the twelve Adityas), Having eyes like lotus, Having a powerful and mighty Sound, Having neither a beginning nor an end, Supporter of the world (as the mighty Adishesha), Dispenser of the fruits of actions which are caused by Him to be taken by individuals) (a second meaning is that He is a special supporter even of those like Adishesha who support the world), He is ‘chit’ consciousness which is superior to everything else (superior to Brahma, or He is the Consciousness which sustains the universe of cause and effect and is the highest of all)

अप्रमेयो हृषीकेशः पद्मनाभोऽमरप्रभुः ।
विश्वकर्मा मनुस्त्वष्टा स्थविष्ठः स्थविरो ध्रुवः ॥ ६॥
Aprameyō hṛṣīkeśaḥ padmanābho’maraprabhuḥ,
Viśvakarmā manustvaṣṭā sthaviṣṭhaḥ sthaviro dhruvaḥ. (6)

Meaning : He is Immeasurable (as He is beyond all sense-objects, He cannot be inferred nor described through analogy or implication), the Lord of the senses, He has lotus which is the origin of all beings in the universe in His navel, the Lord of the Immortals, the Creator of the Universe, the Thinker (also mantra or Prajapati), the Reducer (who reduces all beings when withdrawing them at the time of the pralaya), the Biggest and the Ancient and firm (mature and stable).

अग्राह्यः शाश्वतः कृष्णो लोहिताक्षः प्रतर्दनः ।
प्रभूतस्त्रिककुब्धाम पवित्रं मङ्गलं परम् ॥ ७॥
Agrāhyaḥ śāśvataḥ kṛṣṇō lōhitākṣaḥ pratardanaḥ,
Prabhū-tastrika-kubdhāma pavitraṁ mangalaṁ param. (7)

Meaning : He cannot be grasped (by organs of action), Ever-existing. Has Existence and Bliss (the eternal Brahman), Red-eyed, the Diminisher (of beings during the final deluge), Endowed with qualities (like wisdom, greatness etc.), having the Base or abode of the three regions upper, middle and lower, Means of purification and Supremely beneficient (the Brahman who confers benefits to men merely on being remembered).

ईशानः प्राणदः प्राणो ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठः प्रजापतिः ।
हिरण्यगर्भो भूगर्भो माधवो मधुसूदनः ॥ ८॥
īśānaḥ prāṇadaḥ prāṇō jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ prajāpatiḥ,
hiraṇya-garbhō bhūgarbhō mādhavō madhusūdanaḥ. (8)

Meaning : The Ruler of all beings, Bestower of the vital airs, the Supreme Self or the individual Self, the Eldest and Most Excellent, the Lord of all beings, the Primordial golden egg (Source of the entire universe), having the Universe in Himself, the consort of Lakshmi and the anhilator of the demon Madhu. 8

ईश्वरो विक्रमी धन्वी मेधावी विक्रमः क्रमः ।
अनुत्तमो दुराधर्षः कृतज्ञः कृतिरात्मवान् ॥ ९॥
īśvarō vikramī dhanvī medhāvī vikramaḥ kramaḥ,
anuttamō durā-dharṣaḥ kṛtajñaḥ kṛtir-ātmavān. (9)

Meaning : The all-Potent, the Valiant, the Wielder of the bow, of Powerful memory (capable of understanding many ideas on various subjects at the same time), of Great strides (the rider of Garuda), the Walker (the cause of walking), the Unexcelled, the Unassailable (by demons and others), Knower of all actions done, the effort of humans (He is considered as the basis of every act being the soul of everyone) and centred in His own Glory.

सुरेशः शरणं शर्म विश्वरेताः प्रजाभवः ।
अहः संवत्सरो व्यालः प्रत्ययः सर्वदर्शनः ॥ १०॥
Sureśaḥ śaraṇaṁ śarma viśva-retāḥ prajā-bhavaḥ,
Ahaḥ saṁvatsarō vyālaḥ prat-yayaḥ sarva-darśanaḥ. (10)

Meaning : The Lord of the Gods, the Refuge (as He removes the distress of the miserable), the Supreme Bliss, the Cause of the Universe, the source of all beings, the Day (as He is luminous), the Year (one of Vishnu’s aspects of Time), the Elephant or Serpent (which cannot be grasped), the Consciousness (Brahman), and the All-seeing (who sees all sides as He is omnipresent).

अजः सर्वेश्वरः सिद्धः सिद्धिः सर्वादिरच्युतः ।
वृषाकपिरमेयात्मा सर्वयोगविनिःसृतः ॥ ११॥
Ajaḥ sarveś-varaḥ siddhaḥ siddhiḥ sarvādir-acyutaḥ,
Vṛṣāka-pirame-yātmā sarva-yōga-viniḥ-sṛtaḥ. (11)

Meaning : The Unborn (who is never born), the Lord of all Lords, the (eternally) Perfect, the Attainment (which is permanent as all others are perishable), the Beginning of all, the Unlapsing or Unfailing (who has never fallen nor will He ever lapse).(THUS ARE THE FIRST HUNDRED NAMES) The Dharma and the Boar(who protects the earth as Varaha), One of indeterminable nature, Devoid of all contacts and attachments (the End to be reached and not merely the Means).

वसुर्वसुमनाः सत्यः समात्माऽसम्मितः समः ।
अमोघः पुण्डरीकाक्षो वृषकर्मा वृषाकृतिः ॥ १२॥
Vasur-vasumanāḥ satyaḥ samātmā sam-mitaḥ samaḥ,
Amōghaḥ puṇḍarī-kākṣō vṛṣa-karmā vṛṣā-kṛtiḥ. (12)

Meaning : The Dweller (residing in the heart of the sages, the righteous and the quiescent) (also the Abode of all beings), of Great mind (not polluted by afflictions), the True (the essential of life as He is made up of prana, matter and Sun, or He is the virtue in holy men), the same Self equanimous at all times (or the same self in all beings), Unlimited by every other thing, the Same at all times (or always in union with Lakshmi), of Fruitful worship (makes every desire fulfilled when worshipped, praised or remembered; or, He is always unobstructed), pervading the lotus of the heart (or has lotus-like eyes), of righteous action and Incarnator for the sake of Dharma.

रुद्रो बहुशिरा बभ्रुर्विश्वयोनिः शुचिश्रवाः ।
अमृतः शाश्वतः स्थाणुर्वरारोहो महातपाः ॥ १३॥
Rudrō bahu-śirā babhrur-viśvayōniḥ śuci-śravāḥ,
Amṛtaḥ śāśvataḥ sthāṇur-varārōhō mahā-tapāḥ. (13)

Meaning : He causes people to cry (or who confers good or destroys misery), Many-headed(one who is present everywhere), the Supporter of the world (as Adishesha), the Universal cause, of Holy names (worthy of being heard) Immortal; Eternally firm, of Excellent Ascent (or the Supreme Goal)and of Great Knowledge (the capacity of His Knowledge (tapas) is great, or His glory and greatness are supreme).

सर्वगः सर्वविद्भानुर्विष्वक्सेनो जनार्दनः ।
वेदो वेदविदव्यङ्गो वेदाङ्गो वेदवित् कविः ॥ १४॥
sarvagaḥ sarva-vidbhānur-viṣvaksenō janārdanaḥ,
vedō vedavidavyaṅgō vedāṅgō vedavit kaviḥ. (14)

Meaning : The All-pervading (as the universal cause), the Omniscient Sun (when He shines, all shine after Him), who routes the armies on all sides by merely getting ready for the fight (ever ready to protect his devotees), Chastiser of wicked persons, Embodiment of scriptures (or by residing in the heart of people He drives out the darkness of ignorance by His luminance of wisdom), the Knower of Vedas, the Perfect (in His wisdom, or the Unmanifested), with the Vedas as His parts, Spreading knowledge of Vedas, and the All-seer (intelligent beyond whom there is no other seer).

लोकाध्यक्षः सुराध्यक्षो धर्माध्यक्षः कृताकृतः ।
चतुरात्मा चतुर्व्यूहश्चतुर्दंष्ट्रश्चतुर्भुजः ॥ १५॥
Lōkā-dhyakṣaḥ surā-dhyakṣō dharmā-dhyakṣaḥ kṛtā-kṛtaḥ
Caturātmā caturvyūhaś-caturdaṁṣṭraś-caturbhujaḥ. (15)

Meaning : Lord of the worlds (chief superintendent of all worlds), the Lord of the Immortals (who themselves protect the world), the Superintendent of Dharma (who perceives virtue and vice and confers appropriate fruits), the Cause as well as the Effect, Four-fold in His nature and glory, of Four-fold Manifestation (Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha), Having four teeth (as Narasimha, or having four horns like fangs) and Having four Arms.

भ्राजिष्णुर्भोजनं भोक्ता सहिष्णुर्जगदादिजः ।
अनघो विजयो जेता विश्वयोनिः पुनर्वसुः ॥ १६॥
Bhrā-jiṣṇur-bhojanaṁ bhoktā sahiṣṇur-jagadā-dijaḥ (ha),
Anagho vijayo jetā viśva-yoniḥ punar-vasuḥ (hu). (16)

O Lord, You shine with divine radiance, the sweet giver and enjoyer of all nourishment. You endure all for Your children, O primal source of the universe. Spotless and pure, always victorious, the supreme conqueror, the womb of all creation, You are the ever-abundant refuge of Your devotees.

उपेन्द्रो वामनः प्रांशुरमोघः शुचिरूर्जितः ।
अतीन्द्रः सङ्ग्रहः सर्गो धृतात्मा नियमो यमः ॥ १७॥
Upendro vāmanaḥ prāṁśur-amoghaḥ śucir-ūrjitaḥ (ha).
Atīndraḥ saṅgrahaḥ sargo dhṛtātmā niyamo yamaḥ (ha). (17)

O Upendra, my beloved Vāmana, who took the dwarf form out of compassion! Tall in Your majesty, unfailing in Your promises, pure in every way, resplendent with strength—You are higher than Indra, the gatherer of all beings into Your embrace, the creator, the steady master of self-restraint, and the divine guide of discipline.

वेद्यो वैद्यः सदायोगी वीरहा माधवो मधुः ।
अतीन्द्रियो महामायो महोत्साहो महाबलः ॥ १८॥
Vedyo vaidyaḥ sadāyogī vīrahā mādhavo madhuḥ (hu),
Atīndriyo mahāmāyo mahot-sāho mahābalaḥ (ha). (18)

O Beloved, You are the One revealed by the Vedas, the healer of all sorrows, the eternal yogi, the destroyer of pride in heroes. O Mādhava, sweet as nectar, beyond all senses, Lord of wondrous māyā, overflowing with enthusiasm, and possessing boundless strength—how can my heart not long for You alone?

महाबुद्धिर्महावीर्यो महाशक्तिर्महाद्युतिः ।
अनिर्देश्यवपुः श्रीमान् अमेयात्मा महाद्रिधृक् ॥ १९॥
Mahābuddhir-mahāvīryo mahāśaktir-mahādyutiḥ (hi),
Anirdeśyavapuḥ śrīmān ameyātmā mahādridhṛk. (19)

O Lord of infinite wisdom, immense valor, immeasurable power, and dazzling brilliance! Your form is beyond description, yet supremely beautiful and full of auspiciousness. O immeasurable One, You are the support even of mighty mountains—how tenderly You hold the weight of all worlds!

महेष्वासो महीभर्ता श्रीनिवासः सताङ् गतिः ।
अनिरुद्धः सुरानन्दो गोविन्दो गोविदां पतिः ॥ २०॥
Maheṣ-vāso mahī-bhartā śrīni-vāsaḥ satāṅ gatiḥ (hi),
Aniruddhaḥ surā-nando govindo govidāṁ patiḥ (hi). (20)

O mighty wielder of the bow, protector of Earth, dwelling place of Lakṣmī! O sure refuge of the righteous, Aniruddha, giver of divine bliss to the gods! O Govinda, my shepherd and Lord of all wisdom—my soul bows again and again at Your lotus feet.

मरीचिर्दमनो हंसः सुपर्णो भुजगोत्तमः ।
हिरण्यनाभः सुतपाः पद्मनाभः प्रजापतिः ॥ २१॥
Marīcir-damano haṁsaḥ suparṇo bhuja-gottamaḥ (ha),
Hiraṇya-nābhaḥ sutapāḥ padma-nābhaḥ prajāpatiḥ (hi). (21)

21. O eternal Lord, as Marīci You illumine, as the swan You glide in purity, as Garuḍa You soar, as the best of serpents You protect. O golden-naveled One, O lotus-naveled Creator, O Lord of all beings—my heart longs only for the touch of Your lotus gaze.

अमृत्युः सर्वदृक् सिंहः सन्धाता सन्धिमान् स्थिरः ।
अजो दुर्मर्षणः शास्ता विश्रुतात्मा सुरारिहा ॥ २२॥
Amṛtyuḥ sarvadṛk siṁhaḥ sandhātā sandhimān sthiraḥ (ha),
Ajo durmar-ṣaṇaḥ śāstā viśrutātmā surārihā. (22)

O Deathless One, seer of all, lion among beings, establisher of harmony, unshaken in strength! O unborn Master, destroyer of the enemies of the gods, celebrated ruler of all—may my soul ever dwell at Your lotus feet in awe and love.

गुरुर्गुरुतमो धाम सत्यः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
निमिषोऽनिमिषः स्रग्वी वाचस्पतिरुदारधीः ॥ २३॥
Gurur-gurutamo dhāmaḥ satyaḥ satya-parākramaḥ (ha),
Nimiṣo nimiṣaḥ sragvī vācas-patir-udāradhīḥ (hi). (23)

O Supreme Guru, highest Teacher, shining Abode of light, eternal Truth, and valor in Truth! You who open and close Your eyes to manifest and withdraw creation, O Lord adorned with garlands, master of speech, noble-hearted guide—I adore You with all my love.

अग्रणीर्ग्रामणीः श्रीमान् न्यायो नेता समीरणः ।
सहस्रमूर्धा विश्वात्मा सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात् ॥ २४॥
Agraṇīr-grāmaṇīḥ śrīmān nyāyo netā samīraṇaḥ (ha),
Sahasra-mūrdhā viśvātmā saha-srākṣaḥ saha-srapāt. (24)

O foremost Leader, glorious Guide of guides, O embodiment of justice, O gentle mover of the winds! With a thousand heads, eyes, and feet, You pervade the universe as its very Soul. Beloved Viṣṇu, my heart trembles with love knowing You are everywhere.

आवर्तनो निवृत्तात्मा संवृतः सम्प्रमर्दनः ।
अहः संवर्तको वह्निरनिलो धरणीधरः ॥ २५॥
Āvartanō nivṛt-tātmā saṁvṛtaḥ sampramar-danaḥ (ha),
Ahaḥ saṁvartakō vahnir-anilo dharaṇī-dharaḥ (ha). (25)

O Lord, You are the endless revolution of time, the One whose mind is ever tranquil, hidden yet present everywhere. You are the day and the fire, the breath of wind, the upheaval at dissolution, the unshaken bearer of Earth—my heart clings to You alone for shelter.

सुप्रसादः प्रसन्नात्मा विश्वधृग्विश्वभुग्विभुः ।
सत्कर्ता सत्कृतः साधुर्जह्नुर्नारायणो नरः ॥ २६॥
Suprasādaḥ prasannātmā viśvadhṛg-viśvabhug-vibhuḥ (hu),
Satkartā satkṛtaḥ sādhur-jahnur-nārāyaṇo naraḥ (ha). (26)

O Lord of grace, serene-hearted, sustainer and protector of the universe, all-pervading Beloved! Worthy of worship, honored by the great, embodiment of goodness—You are Jahnu, Nārāyaṇa, the eternal Man Divine. I surrender in love at Your lotus feet.

असङ्ख्येयोऽप्रमेयात्मा विशिष्टः शिष्टकृच्छुचिः ।
सिद्धार्थः सिद्धसङ्कल्पः सिद्धिदः सिद्धिसाधनः ॥ २७॥
Asaṅkhyeyō’prameyātmā viśiṣṭaḥ śiṣṭa-kṛc-chuciḥ (hi),
Siddhārthaḥ siddha-saṅkalpaḥ siddhidaḥ siddhi-sādhanaḥ (ha). (27)

O Infinite Lord, immeasurable in essence, supreme among all, pure Maker of order! You are fulfillment itself, the unfailing Will, the giver of success, and the way to perfection. O Beloved, grant me only the perfection of unbroken love for You.

वृषाही वृषभो विष्णुर्वृषपर्वा वृषोदरः ।
वर्धनो वर्धमानश्च विविक्तः श्रुतिसागरः ॥ २८॥
Vṛṣāhī vṛṣabho viṣṇur-vṛṣaparvā vṛṣodaraḥ (ha),
Vardhano vardha-mānaśca viviktaḥ śruti-sāgaraḥ (ha). (28)

O Upholder of Dharma, Bull of righteousness, O Viṣṇu, strength of the virtuous, You who embody righteousness in every way! O increaser of all, ever-growing and ever-blessing, hidden yet resounding as the ocean of the Vedas—my soul thirsts to serve You forever

सुभुजो दुर्धरो वाग्मी महेन्द्रो वसुदो वसुः ।
नैकरूपो बृहद्रूपः शिपिविष्टः प्रकाशनः ॥ २९॥
Subhujo durdharo vāgmī mahendro vasudo vasuḥ (hu),
Naika-rūpo bṛhad-rūpaḥ śipi-viṣṭaḥ prakāśanaḥ (ha). (29)

O Lord with strong arms, unconquerable, eloquent and majestic as Indra, giver and essence of all wealth! With countless forms and a vast cosmic body, pervading all beings, radiating effulgence—my heart delights to see You everywhere.

ओजस्तेजोद्युतिधरः प्रकाशात्मा प्रतापनः ।
ऋद्धः स्पष्टाक्षरो मन्त्रश्चन्द्रांशुर्भास्करद्युतिः ॥ ३०॥
Ojas-tejo-dyuti-dharaḥ prakāśātmā pratāpanaḥ (ha),
Ṛddhaḥ spaṣṭāk-ṣaro mantraś-candrāṁ-śurbhāskara-dyutiḥ (hi). (30)

O Bearer of infinite vigor, brilliance, and splendor, self-luminous One, blazing like the sun! O prosperous Lord, embodiment of the mantra, shining like the moon and the sun—my soul melts with love at the thought of Your divine light.

अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुः शशबिन्दुः सुरेश्वरः ।
औषधञ् जगतः सेतुः सत्यधर्मपराक्रमः ॥ ३१॥
Amṛtāṁ-śūdbhavo bhānuḥ śaśa-binduḥ sureśvaraḥ (ha),
Auṣadhañ jagataḥ setuḥ satya-dharma-parākramaḥ (ha). (31)

O Lord, You are born of nectar, the radiant sun, the moon with its gentle spot, the sovereign of the gods, the healing herb for all beings, the bridge that holds together the worlds, and the hero of truth and righteousness.

भूतभव्यभवन्नाथः पवनः पावनोऽनलः ।
कामहा कामकृत्कान्तः कामः कामप्रदः प्रभुः ॥ ३२॥
Bhūta-bhavya-bhavan-nāthaḥ pavanaḥ pāvano-nalaḥ (ha),
Kāmahā kāmakṛt-kāntaḥ kāmaḥ kāmapradaḥ prabhuḥ (hu). (32)

O Beloved, Master of past, present, and future, O purifying wind and sacred fire! You destroy worldly desires, yet You also fulfill the pure longings of Your lovers. Beautiful and sweet, You are Love Himself, the giver of love, the eternal Lord.

युगादिकृद्युगावर्तो नैकमायो महाशनः ।
अदृश्यो व्यक्तरूपश्च सहस्रजिदनन्तजित् ॥ ३३॥
Yugā-dikṛd-yugā-varto naika-māyo mahā-śanaḥ (ha),
Adṛśyo vyakta-rūpaśca sahasra-jidanan-tajit. (33)

O Lord of ages, who sets in motion the cycles of time! Wondrous in Your many forms, great consumer of all at dissolution, invisible yet seen in all forms—you conquer thousands and yet remain the Infinite Victor.

इष्टोऽविशिष्टः शिष्टेष्टः शिखण्डी नहुषो वृषः ।
क्रोधहा क्रोधकृत्कर्ता विश्वबाहुर्महीधरः ॥ ३४॥
Iṣṭo-viśiṣṭaḥ śiṣṭeṣṭaḥ śikhaṇḍī nahuṣō vṛṣaḥ (ha),
Krodhahā krodha-kṛt-kartā viśva-bāhur-mahī-dharaḥ (ha). (34)

O Beloved, desired by all, yet beyond all distinction! O cherished One of the noble! With plumed glory, exalted like Nahusha, steady as the bull of dharma—You remove anger, create and guide, and with arms that span the worlds You bear the Earth in love.

अच्युतः प्रथितः प्राणः प्राणदो वासवानुजः ।
अपान् निधिरधिष्ठानमप्रमत्तः प्रतिष्ठितः ॥ ३५॥
Acyutaḥ prathitaḥ prāṇaḥ prāṇado vāsa-vānujaḥ (ha),
Apān nidhir-adhiṣṭhānam-apramattaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ (ha). (35)

O Acyuta, the unfailing One, famed everywhere! You are the very life-breath, the giver of life, the younger brother of Indra who came as Vāmana. You are the treasure of strength, the firm foundation, ever wakeful and firmly established in truth.

स्कन्दः स्कन्दधरो धुर्यो वरदो वायुवाहनः ।
वासुदेवो बृहद्भानुरादिदेवः पुरन्दरः ॥ ३६॥
Skandaḥ skandadharo dhuryo varado vāyu-vāhanaḥ (ha),
Vāsudevo bṛhad-bhānur-ādidevaḥ puran-daraḥ (ha). (36)

O Skanda, carrier of burdens, leader and guide! O giver of boons, mover of winds! O radiant Vāsudeva, great blazing sun, primeval Deva, Lord of all—my soul bows to You in adoration.

अशोकस्तारणस्तारः शूरः शौरिर्जनेश्वरः ।
अनुकूलः शतावर्तः पद्मी पद्मनिभेक्षणः ॥ ३७॥
Aśoka-stāraṇa-stāraḥ śūraḥ śaurir-janeśvaraḥ (ha),
Anukūlaḥ śatā-vartaḥ padmī padma-nibhekṣaṇaḥ (ha). (37)

O remover of sorrow, O savior and star of hope! Brave and valiant, O Śauri, Lord of people! Gentle to Your lovers, unfathomable in Your turns, lotus-bearing, with eyes as soft as blooming lotuses—how can my heart not melt for You?

पद्मनाभोऽरविन्दाक्षः पद्मगर्भः शरीरभृत् ।
महर्द्धिरृद्धो वृद्धात्मा महाक्षो गरुडध्वजः ॥ ३८॥
Padma-nābho-ravin-dākṣaḥ padma-garbhaḥ śarīra-bhṛt।
Maharddhir ṛddho vṛd-dhātmā mahākṣo garuḍa-dhvajaḥ. (38)

O Padmanābha, with lotus-navel, lotus-eyes, lotus-womb, sustainer of bodies! O Lord of immeasurable wealth, O ancient soul of growth, with vast vision and the banner of Garuḍa—Your sight blesses all worlds.

अतुलः शरभो भीमः समयज्ञो हविर्हरिः ।
सर्वलक्षणलक्षण्यो लक्ष्मीवान् समितिञ्जयः ॥ ३९॥
Atulaḥ śarabho bhīmaḥ samayajño havir-hariḥ (hi),
Sarva-lakṣaṇa-lakṣaṇyo lakṣmīvān samitiñ-jayaḥ. (39)

O incomparable One, mighty and awe-inspiring! Knower of time, receiver of offerings, delight of the sacrificial fire! You who embody all noble marks, ever united with Lakṣmī, ever victorious in every assembly of gods—how glorious You are!

विक्षरो रोहितो मार्गो हेतुर्दामोदरः सहः ।
महीधरो महाभागो वेगवानमिताशनः ॥ ४०॥
Vikṣaro rohito mārgo hetur-dāmodaraḥ sahaḥ (ha),
Mahīdharo mahābhāgō vegavāna-mitāśanaḥ (ha). (40)

O unfailing Lord, shining like dawn, the very path, the cause, O Dāmodara of boundless might! You bear the Earth, rich in blessings, swift and powerful, moderate in Your taking, yet infinite in giving—how sweetly You hold Your children!

उद्भवः क्षोभणो देवः श्रीगर्भः परमेश्वरः ।
करणङ् कारणङ् कर्ता विकर्ता गहनो गुहः ॥ ४१॥
Udbhavaḥ kṣobhaṇo devaḥ śrīgarbhaḥ parameśvaraḥ (ha),
Karaṇaṅ kāraṇaṅ kartā vikartā gahano guhaḥ (ha). (41)

O Source of all, O stirrer of creation, O Beloved Deva, womb of Śrī! Supreme Lord, cause and doer, creator and transformer, deep, hidden, mysterious, yet close in love!

व्यवसायो व्यवस्थानः संस्थानः स्थानदो ध्रुवः ।
परर्द्धिः परमस्पष्टस्तुष्टः पुष्टः शुभेक्षणः ॥ ४२॥
Vyava-sāyo vyava-sthānaḥ saṁsthānaḥ sthānado dhruvaḥ (ha),
Pararddhiḥ paramas-paṣṭas-tuṣṭaḥ puṣṭaḥ śubhekṣaṇaḥ (ha). (42)

O Lord, the firm decision, the firm place, the giver of stability, the eternal refuge! O supreme prosperity, clear and radiant, content, ever-nourishing, with a glance full of auspicious blessings—my soul longs for Your smile.

रामो विरामो विरजो मार्गो नेयो नयोऽनयः ।
वीरः शक्तिमतां श्रेष्ठो धर्मो धर्मविदुत्तमः ॥ ४३॥
Rāmo virāmo virajo mārgo neyo nayo-nayaḥ (ha),
Vīraḥ śaktimatāṁ śreṣṭho dharmo dharma-vidut-tamaḥ (ha). (43)

O Rāma, giver of rest, stainless One, the true path, the guide and the guided, the hero among heroes, greatest of the strong! O embodiment of dharma, highest knower of dharma—Your love alone is my law.

वैकुण्ठः पुरुषः प्राणः प्राणदः प्रणवः पृथुः ।
हिरण्यगर्भः शत्रुघ्नो व्याप्तो वायुरधोक्षजः ॥ ४४॥
Vaikuṇṭhaḥ puruṣaḥ prāṇaḥ prāṇadaḥ praṇavaḥ pṛthuḥ (hu),
Hiraṇya-garbhaḥ śatrughno vyāpto vāyura-dhokṣajaḥ (ha). (44)

O Vaikuṇṭha, Lord beyond bounds, the very breath of all beings! O giver of life, sacred syllable Praṇava, mighty and vast! O golden womb, destroyer of enemies, pervading all, unseen by the senses—You alone are my eternal refuge.

ऋतुः सुदर्शनः कालः परमेष्ठी परिग्रहः ।
उग्रः संवत्सरो दक्षो विश्रामो विश्वदक्षिणः ॥ ४५॥
Ṛtuḥ sudarśanaḥ kālaḥ parameṣṭhī parigrahaḥ (ha),
Ugraḥ saṁvatsaro dakṣo viśrāmo viśva-dakṣiṇaḥ (ha). (45)

O Lord, the very season and its beauty, the auspicious discus, the Time eternal! Highest ruler, possessor of all, fierce and mighty, the year itself, skillful and wise, giver of rest, universal benefactor—You are the rhythm of love itself.

विस्तारः स्थावरस्थाणुः प्रमाणं बीजमव्ययम् ।
अर्थोऽनर्थो महाकोशो महाभोगो महाधनः ॥ ४६॥
Vistāraḥ sthāvara-sthāṇuḥ pramāṇaṁ bīja-mavyayam,
Artho-nartho mahā-kośo mahā-bhogo mahā-dhanaḥ (ha). (46)

O Infinite One, vast expansion, immovable and firm! You are the measure and the imperishable seed, the essence and the beyond of essence, the great treasury, the supreme enjoyer, the wealth of all wealth.

अनिर्विण्णः स्थविष्ठोऽभूर्धर्मयूपो महामखः ।
नक्षत्रनेमिर्नक्षत्री क्षमः क्षामः समीहनः ॥ ४७॥
Anir-viṇṇaḥ sthaviṣṭho-bhūr-dharma-yūpo mahā-makhaḥ (ha).
Nakṣatrane-mir-nakṣatrī kṣamaḥ kṣāmaḥ samī-hanaḥ (ha). (47)

O Lord, never weary, most ancient, support of dharma, great sacrificial pillar! You are the cosmic sacrifice, the wheel of stars, their guardian, patient and enduring, yet full of striving for the welfare of Your children.

यज्ञ इज्यो महेज्यश्च क्रतुः सत्रं सताङ् गतिः ।
सर्वदर्शी विमुक्तात्मा सर्वज्ञो ज्ञानमुत्तमम् ॥ ४८॥
Yajña ijyō mahe-jyaśca kratuḥ satraṁ satāṅ gatiḥ (hi),
Sarva-darśī vimuk-tātmā sarvajñō jñāna-muttamam. (48)

O Yajña, O sacrifice embodied, the supreme offering, the sacred rite, the highest path of the noble! All-seeing, liberated in essence, omniscient, and the supreme knowledge itself—Your love is the highest wisdom.

सुव्रतः सुमुखः सूक्ष्मः सुघोषः सुखदः सुहृत् ।
मनोहरो जितक्रोधो वीरबाहुर्विदारणः ॥ ४९॥
Suvrataḥ sumukhaḥ sūkṣmaḥ sughoṣaḥ sukhadaḥ suhṛt,
Mano-haro jita-krodho vīra-bāhur-vidā-raṇaḥ (ha). (49)

O Lord of firm vows, with beautiful face, subtle and gentle, resounding with sweet call! Bestower of happiness, true Friend, captivating heart, conqueror of anger, with heroic arms, destroyer of foes—I long to embrace You in devotion.

स्वापनः स्ववशो व्यापी नैकात्मा नैककर्मकृत् ।
वत्सरो वत्सलो वत्सी रत्नगर्भो धनेश्वरः ॥ ५०॥
Svāpanaḥ svavaśo vyāpī naikātmā naika-karmakṛt,
Vatsaro vatsalo vatsī ratna-garbho dhane-śvaraḥ (ha). (50)

O Lord of rest and sleep, master of Yourself, pervader of all, with countless forms and countless deeds! O Year eternal, affectionate, tender as a calf, full of jewels, sovereign of all wealth—Your love is my treasure.

धर्मगुब्धर्मकृद्धर्मी सदसत्क्षरमक्षरम् ।
अविज्ञाता सहस्रांशुर्विधाता कृतलक्षणः ॥ ५१॥
Dharma-gub-dharma-kṛd-dharmī sadasat-kṣara-makṣaram,
Avijñātā saha-srāṁśur-vidhātā kṛta-lakṣaṇaḥ (ha). (51)

O Protector of dharma, performer of dharma, dharma itself! Eternal and imperishable, known and unknown, thousand-rayed, Creator adorned with marks of perfection! O Beloved, every ray of light carries Your love.

गभस्तिनेमिः सत्त्वस्थः सिंहो भूतमहेश्वरः ।
आदिदेवो महादेवो देवेशो देवभृद्गुरुः ॥ ५२॥
Gabhas-tinemiḥ sattvasthaḥ siṁho bhūta-maheśvaraḥ (ha),
Ādidevo mahādevo deveśo deva-bhṛd-guruḥ (hu). (52)

O Lord, the wheel of the sun’s rays, abiding in sattva, lion among beings, great Lord of all creation! O primeval God, supreme Deva, Lord of lords, divine Teacher of the gods—my soul bows with tears of love.

उत्तरो गोपतिर्गोप्ता ज्ञानगम्यः पुरातनः ।
शरीरभूतभृद्भोक्ता कपीन्द्रो भूरिदक्षिणः ॥ ५३॥
Uttaro gopatir-goptā jñāna-gamyaḥ purātanaḥ (ha),
Śarīra-bhūta-bhṛd-bhoktā kapīndro bhūri-dakṣiṇaḥ (ha). (53)

O Supreme refuge, protector of cows, guardian of all! Accessible only through love and knowledge, ancient and eternal! Sustainer and enjoyer of embodied beings, chief of monkeys in Rāma’s līlā, infinitely generous in grace!

सोमपोऽमृतपः सोमः पुरुजित्पुरुसत्तमः ।
विनयो जयः सत्यसन्धो दाशार्हः सात्वतां पतिः ॥ ५४॥
Somapo-mṛtapaḥ somaḥ purujit-puru-sattamaḥ (ha),
Vinayo jayaḥ satya-sandho dāśārhaḥ sātvatāṁ patiḥ (hi). (54)

O Lord who drinks soma, who is Himself soma, conqueror of all, best among men! Gentle in conduct, victorious, faithful to truth, jewel of the Yadus, master of the Sātvatas—Your sweetness overflows in love.

जीवो विनयिता साक्षी मुकुन्दोऽमितविक्रमः ।
अम्भोनिधिरनन्तात्मा महोदधिशयोऽन्तकः ॥ ५५॥
Jīvo vinayitā sākṣī mukundo-mita-vikramaḥ (ha),
Ambho-nidhir-anantātmā mahodadhi-śayontakaḥ (ha). (55)

O eternal Life, gentle Witness, giver of liberation, of immeasurable power! O boundless ocean, infinite soul, who rests upon the cosmic ocean, and at the end withdraws all lovingly into Yourself—my heart clings to You.

अजो महार्हः स्वाभाव्यो जितामित्रः प्रमोदनः ।
आनन्दो नन्दनो नन्दः सत्यधर्मा त्रिविक्रमः ॥ ५६॥
Ajo mahārhaḥ svābhāvyo jitāmitraḥ pramodanaḥ (ha),
Ānando nandano nandaḥ satyadharmā trivikramaḥ (ha). (56)

O unborn Lord, of supreme worth, self-existent, conqueror of foes, delighting in bliss! You are joy, giver of joy, bliss itself, knower of truth, and the mighty Trivikrama whose three strides bless all worlds.

महर्षिः कपिलाचार्यः कृतज्ञो मेदिनीपतिः ।
त्रिपदस्त्रिदशाध्यक्षो महाश‍ृङ्गः कृतान्तकृत् ॥ ५७॥
Maharṣiḥ kapilā-cāryaḥ kṛtajño medinī-patiḥ (hi),
Tripadas-tridaśā-dhyakṣo mahā-śṛṅgaḥ kṛtān-takṛt. (57)

O great seer Kapila, compassionate teacher, knower of gratitude, sovereign of Earth! O three-stepped One, overseer of gods, lofty-horned, ender of time—yet tenderly holding the devotee’s heart!

महावराहो गोविन्दः सुषेणः कनकाङ्गदी ।
गुह्यो गभीरो गहनो गुप्तश्चक्रगदाधरः ॥ ५८॥
Mahā-varāho govindaḥ suṣeṇaḥ kana-kāṅgadī,
Guhyo gabhīro gahano guptaś-cakra-gadā-dharaḥ (ha). (58)

O great Varāha, beloved Govinda, beautifully armed, adorned with golden ornaments! Mysterious, deep, unfathomable, hidden in love, bearer of the discus and mace—my soul longs for Your embrace.

वेधाः स्वाङ्गोऽजितः कृष्णो दृढः सङ्कर्षणोऽच्युतः ।
वरुणो वारुणो वृक्षः पुष्कराक्षो महामनाः ॥ ५९॥
Vedhāḥ svāṅgo-jitaḥ kṛṣṇo dṛḍhaḥ saṅkar-ṣaṇo-cyutaḥ (ha),
Varuṇo vāruṇo vṛukṣaḥ puṣkarākṣo mahā-manāḥ (h). (59)

O Creator, perfect in all limbs, unconquerable Kṛṣṇa! Steadfast and strong, Sankarṣaṇa, Acyuta! O Varuṇa, Lord of waters, great tree of shelter, lotus-eyed, with noble mind—my tears flow at Your beauty.

भगवान् भगहाऽऽनन्दी वनमाली हलायुधः ।
आदित्यो ज्योतिरादित्यः सहिष्णुर्गतिसत्तमः ॥ ६०॥
Bhagavān bhagahā-nandī vanamālī halā-yudhaḥ (ha),
Ādityo jyotir-ādityaḥ sahiṣṇur-gati-sattamaḥ (ha). (60)

O Bhagavān, destroyer of misfortune, delight of all, garlanded with forest flowers, wielder of the plough! O Sun among suns, radiant light, patient and gentle, best of guides—how sweetly You lead us!

सुधन्वा खण्डपरशुर्दारुणो द्रविणप्रदः ।
दिवस्पृक् सर्वदृग्व्यासो वाचस्पतिरयोनिजः ॥ ६१॥
Sudhanvā khaṇḍa-paraśur-dāruṇo draviṇa-pradaḥ (ha),
Divaspṛk sarva-dṛg-vyāso vācas-patir-ayonijaḥ (ha). (61)

O Lord with auspicious bow, with axe and might, remover of obstacles, giver of wealth! You touch the heavens, see all, are Vyāsa Himself, master of speech, unborn One—Your love shines through every word of wisdom.

त्रिसामा सामगः साम निर्वाणं भेषजं भिषक् ।
संन्यासकृच्छमः शान्तो निष्ठा शान्तिः परायणम् ॥ ६२॥
Trisāmā sāmagaḥ sāma nirvāṇaṁ bheṣajaṁ bhiṣak,
Sannyāsakṛcchama śānto niṣṭhā śāntiḥ parāyaṇam. (62)

O Lord of the triple Sāma, singer of Sāma, essence of Sāma! Liberation itself, the healing remedy, the supreme physician! You embrace sannyāsa, embody forgiveness, are peace itself, the ultimate goal of love.

शुभाङ्गः शान्तिदः स्रष्टा कुमुदः कुवलेशयः ।
गोहितो गोपतिर्गोप्ता वृषभाक्षो वृषप्रियः ॥ ६३॥
Śubhāṅgaḥ śāntidaḥ sraṣṭā kumudaḥ kuvale-śayaḥ (ha),
Gohito gopatir-goptā vṛṣa-bhākṣo vṛṣa-priyaḥ (ha). (63)

O beautiful One, giver of peace, creator of joy! O moonlike Kumuda, O cosmic recliner upon the ocean! Protector of cows, guardian and friend, bull-eyed, lover of dharma—Your mercy alone sustains the world.

अनिवर्ती निवृत्तात्मा सङ्क्षेप्ता क्षेमकृच्छिवः ।
श्रीवत्सवक्षाः श्रीवासः श्रीपतिः श्रीमतांवरः ॥ ६४॥
Anivartī nivṛt-tātmā sankṣeptā kṣema-kṛc-chivaḥ (ha),
Śrīvatsa-vakṣāḥ śrīvāsaḥ śrīpatiḥ śrīmatāṁvaraḥ (ha). (64)

O Lord who never turns back, ever content within, concise yet all-protecting, auspicious and full of welfare! With Śrīvatsa on Your chest, dwelling place of Lakṣmī, Lord of Śrī, supreme among the glorious—my heart bows forever.

श्रीदः श्रीशः श्रीनिवासः श्रीनिधिः श्रीविभावनः ।
श्रीधरः श्रीकरः श्रेयः श्रीमाँल्लोकत्रयाश्रयः ॥ ६५॥
Śrīdaḥ śrīśaḥ śrīnivāsaḥ śrīnidhiḥ śrīvibhāvanaḥ (ha),
Śrīdharaḥ śrīkaraḥ śreyaḥ śrīmān-loka-trayā-śrayaḥ (ha). (65)

O giver of fortune, Lord of Śrī, dwelling place of Śrī, treasure of Śrī, revealer of Śrī! O bearer of Śrī, source of Śrī, supreme bliss, Śrīmān, shelter of the three worlds—my love rests only at Your lotus feet.

स्वक्षः स्वङ्गः शतानन्दो नन्दिर्ज्योतिर्गणेश्वरः ।
विजितात्माऽविधेयात्मा सत्कीर्तिश्छिन्नसंशयः ॥ ६६॥
Svakṣaḥ svaṅgaḥ śatānaṅdo naṅdir-jyotir-gaṇeśvaraḥ (ha),
Vijitātmā vidheyātmā satkīrtiś-chinna-saṁśayaḥ (ha). (66)

He whose eyes and limbs shine with divine beauty, who is the source of endless bliss to all beings, who is the true light among the hosts of luminaries. He has conquered His own senses, is ever self-controlled, resplendent with spotless glory, and dispels all doubts from the hearts of His devotees.

उदीर्णः सर्वतश्चक्षुरनीशः शाश्वतस्थिरः ।
भूशयो भूषणो भूतिर्विशोकः शोकनाशनः ॥ ६७॥
Udīrṇaḥ sarvataś-cakṣur-anīśaḥ śāśvata-sthiraḥ (ha),
Bhūśayo bhūṣaṇo bhūtir-viśokaḥ śoka-nāśanaḥ (ha). (67)

He rises high above all, His gaze falls upon every direction, yet He Himself is without dependence. Eternal and unshakable, He rests upon the Earth yet also ornaments and blesses her. He is free from sorrow, and with His love He destroys the grief of His children.

अर्चिष्मानर्चितः कुम्भो विशुद्धात्मा विशोधनः ।
अनिरुद्धोऽप्रतिरथः प्रद्युम्नोऽमितविक्रमः ॥ ६८॥
Arciṣmān-arcitaḥ kumbho viśuddhātmā viśo-dhanaḥ,
Aniruddho-pratirathaḥ pradyumno-mita-vikramaḥ (ha). (68)

He radiates effulgence, adored by all. His being is pure and cleansing. As Aniruddha, He is invincible in battle; as Pradyumna, He manifests infinite valor.

कालनेमिनिहा वीरः शौरिः शूरजनेश्वरः ।
त्रिलोकात्मा त्रिलोकेशः केशवः केशिहा हरिः ॥ ६९॥
Kālane-minihā vīraḥ śauriḥ śūra-janeśvaraḥ (ha),
Trilokātmā trilokeśaḥ keśavaḥ keśihā hariḥ (hi). (69)

He is the slayer of Kālanemi, the supreme hero, the protector of the valiant, and Lord of warriors. He is the indwelling Self of the three worlds, their eternal Master. He is Keśava, the slayer of the Keśī demon, Hari—the compassionate remover of sins.

कामदेवः कामपालः कामी कान्तः कृतागमः ।
अनिर्देश्यवपुर्विष्णुर्वीरोऽनन्तो धनञ्जयः ॥ ७०॥
Kāmadevaḥ kāmapālaḥ kāmī kāntaḥ kṛtāgamaḥ (ha),
Anirdeśya-vapur-viṣṇur-vīronanto dhanañ-jayaḥ (ha). (70)

He is the true Kāma-deva, the fulfiller and protector of every pure desire, the eternal Lover and Beloved. His form is beyond description, yet as Viṣṇu He reveals Himself to devotees. He is the infinite hero, the victorious one, the eternal conqueror.

ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मकृद् ब्रह्मा ब्रह्म ब्रह्मविवर्धनः ।
ब्रह्मविद् ब्राह्मणो ब्रह्मी ब्रह्मज्ञो ब्राह्मणप्रियः ॥ ७१॥
Brahmaṇyo brahmakṛd brahmā brahma brahma-vivar-dhanaḥ (ha),
Brahmavid brāhmaṇo brahmī brahmajño brāhmaṇa-priyaḥ (ha). (71)

He is ever devoted to the Vedas, their creator, sustainer, and expounder. He is Brahman itself and the increaser of divine knowledge. Knower of Brahman, beloved of brāhmaṇas, and Himself the eternal spiritual guide.

महाक्रमो महाकर्मा महातेजा महोरगः ।
महाक्रतुर्महायज्वा महायज्ञो महाहविः ॥ ७२॥
Mahā-kramo mahā-karmā mahā-tejā maho-ragaḥ (ha),
Mahā-kratur-mahā-yajvā mahā-yajño mahā-haviḥ (hi). (72)

He is the performer of great strides and great deeds, blazing with infinite energy. He is the mighty serpent supporting the worlds, the great sacrifice, the supreme yajamāna, the very oblation and offering.

स्तव्यः स्तवप्रियः स्तोत्रं स्तुतिः स्तोता रणप्रियः ।
पूर्णः पूरयिता पुण्यः पुण्यकीर्तिरनामयः ॥ ७३॥
Stavyaḥ stavapriyaḥ stotraṁ stutiḥ stotā raṇapriyaḥ (ha),
Pūrṇaḥ pūrayitā puṇyaḥ puṇya-kīrtir-anāmayaḥ (ha). (73)

He is worthy of hymns and loves the praises of His children. He is Himself the hymn, the prayer, and the devotee who offers it. He delights in battle for the protection of dharma. He is complete, the fulfiller of all, purest virtue, of spotless fame, and free from all afflictions.

मनोजवस्तीर्थकरो वसुरेता वसुप्रदः ।
वसुप्रदो वासुदेवो वसुर्वसुमना हविः ॥ ७४॥
Manojavastīr-thakaro vasuretā vasupradaḥ (ha),
Vasuprado vāsudevo vasur-vasumanā haviḥ (hi). (74)

Swifter than the mind, He creates sacred fords of liberation. He is the seed of wealth, the giver of treasures, and the supreme Vāsudeva. He is wealth itself, the noble-hearted one, the supreme offering.

सद्गतिः सत्कृतिः सत्ता सद्भूतिः सत्परायणः ।
शूरसेनो यदुश्रेष्ठः सन्निवासः सुयामुनः ॥ ७५॥
Sadgatiḥ satkṛtiḥ sattā sadbhūtiḥ satparāyaṇaḥ (ha),
Śūraseno yadu-śreṣṭhaḥ sanni-vāsaḥ suyā-munaḥ (ha). (75)

He is the true goal, true honor, the very existence, and the foundation of all good. He is the refuge of saints, the crest jewel of the Yadus, the eternal dwelling of His devotees, and the Lord of the holy Yamunā.

भूतावासो वासुदेवः सर्वासुनिलयोऽनलः ।
दर्पहा दर्पदो दृप्तो दुर्धरोऽथापराजितः ॥ ७६॥
Bhūtāvāso vāsudevaḥ sarvā-sunilayo-nalaḥ (ha),
Darpahā darpado dṛpto durdharothā-parājitaḥ (ha). (76)

The abode of all beings, Vāsudeva, the indweller in every soul. He is like fire hidden in all, the destroyer of pride, yet the giver of strength and honor. He is unconquerable, beyond restraint, and never defeated.

विश्वमूर्तिर्महामूर्तिर्दीप्तमूर्तिरमूर्तिमान् ।
अनेकमूर्तिरव्यक्तः शतमूर्तिः शताननः ॥ ७७॥
Viśvamūrtir-mahāmūrtir-dīptamūrtir-amūrtimān,
Anekamūrtir-avyaktaḥ śatamūrtiḥ śatānanaḥ (ha). (77)

He is the universal form, the great cosmic form, blazing with effulgence, yet also beyond all form. He manifests infinite forms, unmanifest and unseen, with countless faces and endless names.

एको नैकः सवः कः किञ् यत् तत्पदमनुत्तमम् ।
लोकबन्धुर्लोकनाथो माधवो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ ७८॥
Eko naikaḥ savaḥ kaḥ kiñ yat tat-padama-nuttamam,
Loka-bandhur-loka-nātho mādhavo bhakta-vatsalaḥ (ha). (78)

He is the One and also the Many, the supreme Reality beyond comprehension. He is the highest goal. He is the friend of all beings, the Lord of all worlds, Mādhava, the tender-hearted Beloved of devotees.

सुवर्णवर्णो हेमाङ्गो वराङ्गश्चन्दनाङ्गदी ।
वीरहा विषमः शून्यो घृताशीरचलश्चलः ॥ ७९॥
Suvarṇa-varṇo hemāṅgo varāṅgaś-canda-nāṅgadī,
Vīrahā viṣamaḥ śūnyo ghṛtā-śīr-acalaścalaḥ (ha). (79)

Golden in complexion, with radiant limbs adorned with sandal paste, beautiful in every way. He slays the valiant enemies, He is beyond comparison, beyond void, full of sweetness like clarified butter, yet firm and unfaltering.

अमानी मानदो मान्यो लोकस्वामी त्रिलोकधृक् ।
सुमेधा मेधजो धन्यः सत्यमेधा धराधरः ॥ ८०॥
Amānī mānado mānyo lokasvāmī trilokadhṛk,
Sumedhā medhajo dhanyaḥ satyamedhā dharādharaḥ (ha). (80)

Free from pride, yet the giver of honor, ever worthy of worship. He is the Lord of all worlds, the sustainer of the three. Possessed of noble intellect, the best of thoughts, blessed and wise, the support of truth, the upholder of Earth.

तेजोवृषो द्युतिधरः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
प्रग्रहो निग्रहो व्यग्रो नैकश‍ृङ्गो गदाग्रजः ॥ ८१॥
Tejovṛṣo dyutidharaḥ sarva-śastra-bhṛtāṁ varaḥ (ha),
Pragraho nigraho vyagro naika-śṛṅgo gadā-grajaḥ (ha). (81)

He is the bull of strength, radiant with brilliance, the best among all warriors bearing weapons. He controls and releases at will, ever eager in protection, with many horns of power, elder brother of the mace.

चतुर्मूर्तिश्चतुर्बाहुश्चतुर्व्यूहश्चतुर्गतिः ।
चतुरात्मा चतुर्भावश्चतुर्वेदविदेकपात् ॥ ८२॥
Caturmūrtiś-caturbāhuś-caturvyūhaś-caturgatiḥ (hi),
Caturātmā caturbhāvaś-caturveda-videkapāt. (82)

He is of four forms, four arms, four manifestations, and fourfold goals. His essence is fourfold, He is the origin of the four states, the knower of the four Vedas, the One who strides everywhere.

समावर्तोऽनिवृत्तात्मा दुर्जयो दुरतिक्रमः ।
दुर्लभो दुर्गमो दुर्गो दुरावासो दुरारिहा ॥ ८३॥
Samāvarto-nivṛt-tātmā durjayo durati-kramaḥ (ha),
Durlabho durgamo durgo durāvāso durārihā. (83)

He revolves creation and dissolution, His mind ever turned inward. Unconquerable, beyond transgression, rare to be attained, difficult to approach. He is the fortress, the secure abode, and the destroyer of the enemies of dharma.

शुभाङ्गो लोकसारङ्गः सुतन्तुस्तन्तुवर्धनः ।
इन्द्रकर्मा महाकर्मा कृतकर्मा कृतागमः ॥ ८४॥
Śubhāṅgo loka-sāraṅgaḥ sutantus-tantu-vardhanaḥ (ha),
Indra-karmā mahā-karmā kṛta-karmā kṛtā-gamaḥ (ha). (84)

His limbs are auspicious, He is the swan of the world-lake, the weaver and sustainer of destiny. He is the performer of Indra’s deeds, of great acts and mighty sacrifices, faithful to the śāstras and the Vedas.

उद्भवः सुन्दरः सुन्दो रत्ननाभः सुलोचनः ।
अर्को वाजसनः श‍ृङ्गी जयन्तः सर्वविज्जयी ॥ ८५॥
Udbhavaḥ sundaraḥ sundo ratna-nābhaḥ sulocanaḥ (ha),
Arko vājasanaḥ śṛṅgī jayantaḥ sarva-vijjayī. (85)

He is the source of all, supremely beautiful, radiant with jeweled navel and lotus-like eyes. He is the Sun, the giver of strength, the horned one, victorious in every battle, conquering all.

सुवर्णबिन्दुरक्षोभ्यः सर्ववागीश्वरेश्वरः ।
महाह्रदो महागर्तो महाभूतो महानिधिः ॥ ८६॥
Suvarṇa-bindur-akṣobhyaḥ sarva-vāgīśvare-śvaraḥ (ha),
Mahā-hrado mahā-garto mahābhūto mahā-nidhiḥ (hi). (86)

He is the golden drop of immortality, immovable, unshakable, Lord of all speech and wisdom. He is the great ocean, the great depth, the great element, and the supreme treasure.

कुमुदः कुन्दरः कुन्दः पर्जन्यः पावनोऽनिलः ।
अमृताशोऽमृतवपुः सर्वज्ञः सर्वतोमुखः ॥ ८७॥
Kumudaḥ kundaraḥ kundaḥ parjanyaḥ pāvano-nilaḥ (ha),
Amṛtāśo-mṛtavapuḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvato-mukhaḥ (ha). (87)

He is Kumuda, Kundara, the pure white lotus, the rain-cloud of mercy, the purifier, the gentle breeze. His body is nectar, He grants immortality, He knows all and looks in every direction.

सुलभः सुव्रतः सिद्धः शत्रुजिच्छत्रुतापनः ।
न्यग्रोधोऽदुम्बरोऽश्वत्थश्चाणूरान्ध्रनिषूदनः ॥ ८८॥
Sulabhaḥ suvrataḥ siddhaḥ śatrujic-chatru-tāpanaḥ (ha),
Nyagrodho-dumbaro-śvat-thaś-cāṇūrāndhra-niṣūdanaḥ (ha). (88)

Easily attained, vow-keeping, ever perfect. He conquers foes and burns away enemies of dharma. He is like the holy trees—Nyagrodha, Udumbara, and Aśvattha—and He slew the wicked Cāṇūra.

सहस्रार्चिः सप्तजिह्वः सप्तैधाः सप्तवाहनः ।
अमूर्तिरनघोऽचिन्त्यो भयकृद्भयनाशनः ॥ ८९॥
Saha-srārciḥ sapta-jihvaḥ saptaidhāḥ sapta-vāhanaḥ (ha),
Amūrtir-anagho-cintyo bhayakṛd-bhaya-nāśanaḥ (ha). (89)

He shines with a thousand rays, with seven tongues of fire, seven flames, seven steeds. He is formless, pure, beyond thought, creator of fear for the wicked, destroyer of fear for the devotees.

अणुर्बृहत्कृशः स्थूलो गुणभृन्निर्गुणो महान् ।
अधृतः स्वधृतः स्वास्यः प्राग्वंशो वंशवर्धनः ॥ ९०॥
Aṇur-bṛhat-kṛśaḥ sthūlo guṇa-bhṛnnir-guṇo mahān,
Adhṛtaḥ svadhṛtaḥ svāsyaḥ prāgvaṁśo vaṁśa-vardhanaḥ (ha). (90)

Smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest, subtle yet vast. He sustains qualities yet is beyond them. He is self-supported, self-faced, the origin of all lineages, the increaser of families.

भारभृत् कथितो योगी योगीशः सर्वकामदः ।
आश्रमः श्रमणः क्षामः सुपर्णो वायुवाहनः ॥ ९१॥
Bhāra-bhṛt kathito yogī yogīśaḥ sarva-kāmadaḥ (ha),
Āśramaḥ śramaṇaḥ kṣāmaḥ suparṇo vāyu-vāhanaḥ (ha). (91)

He bears the burden of the worlds, is the true Yogi, the Lord of Yogis, giver of all desires. He is the resting place of seekers, austere, lean with tapas, the mighty Suparṇa, borne on the wind.

धनुर्धरो धनुर्वेदो दण्डो दमयिता दमः ।
अपराजितः सर्वसहो नियन्ताऽनियमोऽयमः ॥ ९२॥
Dhanur-dharo dhanur-vedo daṅḍo damayitā damaḥ (ha),
Aparājitaḥ sarva-saho niyantā-niyamo-yamaḥ (ha). (92)

He wields the bow and knows its science, He is the rod of discipline, the controller, the very embodiment of restraint. He is unconquered, enduring all, the supreme governor and regulator of all beings.

सत्त्ववान् सात्त्विकः सत्यः सत्यधर्मपरायणः ।
अभिप्रायः प्रियार्होऽर्हः प्रियकृत् प्रीतिवर्धनः ॥ ९३॥
Sattvavān sāttvikaḥ satyaḥ satya-dharma-parāyaṇaḥ (ha),
Abhiprāyaḥ priyār-horhaḥ priyakṛt prīti-vardhanaḥ (ha). (93)

Full of sattva, established in truth, devoted to righteous dharma. His will is unfailing, worthy of worship, delighting His devotees with love, ever increasing their joy.

विहायसगतिर्ज्योतिः सुरुचिर्हुतभुग्विभुः ।
रविर्विरोचनः सूर्यः सविता रविलोचनः ॥ ९४॥
Vihā-yasagatir-jyotiḥ surucir-hutabhug-vibhuḥ (hu),
Ravir-virocanaḥ sūryaḥ savitā ravilo-canaḥ (ha). (94)

He moves through the skies, the very light of the worlds, radiant like fire, pervading everything. He is the Sun, the resplendent Surya, the nourisher, the eye of the universe.

अनन्तो हुतभुग्भोक्ता सुखदो नैकजोऽग्रजः ।
अनिर्विण्णः सदामर्षी लोकाधिष्ठानमद्भुतः ॥ ९५॥
Ananto huta-bhug-bhoktā sukhado naikajo-grajaḥ (ha),
Anir-viṇṇaḥ sadā-marṣī lokā-dhiṣṭhāna-madbhutaḥ (ha). (95)

Infinite in form and wealth, He consumes offerings yet Himself is the enjoyer. He is bliss-giver, unborn yet elder to all. Ever patient, never weary, He is the wondrous support of all worlds.

सनात्सनातनतमः कपिलः कपिरव्ययः ।
स्वस्तिदः स्वस्तिकृत्स्वस्ति स्वस्तिभुक्स्वस्तिदक्षिणः ॥ ९६॥
Sanāt-sanātana-tamaḥ kapilaḥ kapir-avyayaḥ (ha),
Svastidaḥ svasti-kṛt-svasti svasti-bhuk-svasti-dakṣiṇaḥ (ha). (96)

He is eternal, the most ancient, Kapila, the imperishable seer. He grants auspiciousness, performs auspiciousness, enjoys auspiciousness, and blesses with auspicious gifts.

अरौद्रः कुण्डली चक्री विक्रम्यूर्जितशासनः ।
शब्दातिगः शब्दसहः शिशिरः शर्वरीकरः ॥ ९७॥
Araudraḥ kunḍalī cakrī vikram-yūrjita-śāsanaḥ (ha),
Śabdā-tigaḥ śabda-sahaḥ śiśiraḥ śarva-rīkaraḥ (ha). (97)

He is gentle, yet fierce to the wicked. Wearing earrings, bearing the discus, His commands are mighty. Beyond sound, tolerant of all, cool and soothing like the moonlit night.

अक्रूरः पेशलो दक्षो दक्षिणः क्षमिणांवरः ।
विद्वत्तमो वीतभयः पुण्यश्रवणकीर्तनः ॥ ९८॥
Akrūraḥ peśalo dakṣo dakṣiṇaḥ kṣamiṇāṁ-varaḥ (ha),
Vidvat-tamo vīta-bhayaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ (ha). (98)

He is Akrūra, gentle, skillful, kind, foremost among the forgiving. Supreme among the wise, fear-dispeller, sanctifying by His holy names and glories.

उत्तारणो दुष्कृतिहा पुण्यो दुःस्वप्ननाशनः ।
वीरहा रक्षणः सन्तो जीवनः पर्यवस्थितः ॥ ९९॥
Uttāraṇo duṣkṛtihā puṇyo duḥ-svapna-nāśanaḥ (ha),
Vīrahā rakṣaṇaḥ santo jīvanaḥ parya-vasthitaḥ (ha). (99)

He is the Deliverer, destroyer of sins, supremely pure, remover of bad dreams. He is protector, savior, the very life of the saints, ever present.

अनन्तरूपोऽनन्तश्रीर्जितमन्युर्भयापहः ।
चतुरश्रो गभीरात्मा विदिशो व्यादिशो दिशः ॥ १००॥
Ananta-rūpo-nantaśrīr-jitamanyur-bhayā-pahaḥ (ha),
Caturaśro gabhīrātmā vidiśo vyādiśo diśaḥ (ha). (100)

Infinite in form and glory, beyond anger, dispeller of fear. All-seeing in every direction, profound in essence, pervading all quarters.

अनादिर्भूर्भुवो लक्ष्मीः सुवीरो रुचिराङ्गदः ।
जननो जनजन्मादिर्भीमो भीमपराक्रमः ॥ १०१॥
Anādir-bhūr-bhuvo lakṣmī suvīro ruci-rāṅgadaḥ (ha),
Janano jana-janmādir-bhīmo bhīma-parākramaḥ (ha). (101)

Without beginning, the source of Earth and heaven. Rich with Lakṣmī, heroic, beautifully adorned. The origin of all births, the mighty and fearless one.

आधारनिलयोऽधाता पुष्पहासः प्रजागरः ।
ऊर्ध्वगः सत्पथाचारः प्राणदः प्रणवः पणः ॥ १०२॥
Ādhāra-nilayo-dhātā puṣpa-hāsaḥ prajā-garaḥ (ha),
Urdhvaga satpathā-cāraḥ prāṇadaḥ praṇavaḥ paṇaḥ (ha). (102)

The foundation and abode, the sustainer, smiling like flowers, ever awake for His children. He is uplifted, follower of the righteous path, giver of life, the sacred Om, the supreme wealth.

प्रमाणं प्राणनिलयः प्राणभृत्प्राणजीवनः ।
तत्त्वन् तत्त्वविदेकात्मा जन्ममृत्युजरातिगः ॥ १०३॥
Pramāṇaṁ prāṇa-nilayaḥ prāṇa-bhṛt-prāṇa-jīvanaḥ (ha),
Tattvan tattva-vide-kātmā janma-mṛtyu-jarātigaḥ (ha). (103)

He is the true measure, abode of life-breath, supporter and giver of life. He is Truth, knower of Truth, one with Truth, beyond birth, death, and old age.

भूर्भुवःस्वस्तरुस्तारः सविता प्रपितामहः ।
यज्ञो यज्ञपतिर्यज्वा यज्ञाङ्गो यज्ञवाहनः ॥ १०४॥
Bhūr-bhuvaḥ-svasta-rustāraḥ savitā prapitā-mahaḥ (ha),
Yajño yajña-patir-yajvā yajñāṅgo yajña-vāhanaḥ (ha). (104)

He is Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, and Svaḥ, the tree of life, the savior, the Sun, the great grandsire. He is sacrifice, Lord of sacrifice, performer of sacrifice, essence of sacrifice, and the vehicle of sacrifice.

यज्ञभृद् यज्ञकृद् यज्ञी यज्ञभुग् यज्ञसाधनः ।
यज्ञान्तकृद् यज्ञगुह्यमन्नमन्नाद एव च ॥ १०५॥
Yajña-bhṛd-yajña-kṛd-yajñī yajña-bhug-yajña-sādhanaḥ (ha),
Yajñān-takṛd yajña-guhya-manna-mannāda eva ca. (105)

He bears sacrifice, performs it, is the sacrificer, the enjoyer, and the means. He concludes sacrifices, hides their mysteries, and is both food and the eater of food.

आत्मयोनिः स्वयञ्जातो वैखानः सामगायनः ।
देवकीनन्दनः स्रष्टा क्षितीशः पापनाशनः ॥ १०६॥
Ātmayoniḥ svayañjāto vaikhānaḥ sāma-gāyanaḥ (ha),
Devakī-nandanaḥ sraṣṭā kṣitīśaḥ pāpa-nāśanaḥ (ha). (106)

Self-born, self-manifest, Vaikhāna, singer of the Sāma. He is the beloved son of Devakī, the supreme creator, Lord of Earth, destroyer of sins.

शङ्खभृन्नन्दकी चक्री शार्ङ्गधन्वा गदाधरः ।
रथाङ्गपाणिरक्षोभ्यः सर्वप्रहरणायुधः ॥ १०७॥
सर्वप्रहरणायुध ॐन् नम इति ।
Śaṅkha-bhṛn-nandakī cakrī śārṅ-gadhanvā gadā-dharaḥ (ha),
Rathāṅga-pāṇir-akṣobhyaḥ sarva-praha-raṇā-yudhaḥ (ha). (107)
Sarva-praha-raṇā-yudha on nama iti.

He bears the conch, the sword Nandaka, the discus, the bow Śārṅga, and the mace. He holds the wheel of the chariot, unshakable, armed with all weapons, the ultimate defender of dharma.

वनमाली गदी शार्ङ्गी शङ्खी चक्री च नन्दकी ।
श्रीमान् नारायणो विष्णुर्वासुदेवोऽभिरक्षतु ॥ १०८॥
श्री वासुदेवोऽभिरक्षतु ॐन् नम इति ।
Vanamālī gadī śārṅgī śaṅkhī cakrī ca nandakī,
Śrīmān nārāyaṇo viṣṇur-vāsudevo-bhirak-ṣatu. (108)
Śrī vāsudevo-bhirak-ṣatu on nama iti.
(Chant this shloka 3 times and end it with the below line)

Clad with forest garland, wielder of conch, discus, sword, bow, and mace, Śrīmān Nārāyaṇa, Viṣṇu, Vāsudeva—may He lovingly protect us always.

फलश्रुति / Phalaśruti

भीष्म उवाच—
इतीदङ् कीर्तनीयस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः ।
नाम्नां सहस्रन् दिव्यानामशेषेण प्रकीर्तितम् ॥ १॥
Bhīṣma uvāca –
Itīdaṅ kīrtanī-yasya keśa-vasya mahāt-manaḥ (ha),
Nāmnāṁ sahasran divyānām-aśeṣeṇa prakīrtitam. (1)

Whoever chants these thousand names of Śrī Viṣṇu with devotion gains His eternal shelter and blessings.

य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यञ् यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत् ।
नाशुभं प्राप्नुयात्किञ्चित्सोऽमुत्रेह च मानवः ॥ २॥
Ya idaṁ śṛṇuyān-nityañ yaścāpi parikīr-tayet,
Nāśubhaṁ prāpnuyāt kiñcit somutreha ca mānavaḥ (ha). (2)

By this recitation, one is freed from fear of birth, death, and sorrow, and attains liberation.

वेदान्तगो ब्राह्मणः स्यात्क्षत्रियो विजयी भवेत् ।
वैश्यो धनसमृद्धः स्याच्छूद्रः सुखमवाप्नुयात् ॥ ३॥
Vedāntago brāhmaṇaḥ syāt kṣatriyo vijayī bhavet,
Vaiśyo dhana-samṛddhaḥ syāc-chūdraḥ sukha-mavāpnuyāt. (3)

A brāhmaṇa attains knowledge, a kṣatriya gains victory, a vaiśya prospers in wealth, and a śūdra becomes happy by reciting these names.

धर्मार्थी प्राप्नुयाद्धर्ममर्थार्थी चार्थमाप्नुयात् ।
कामानवाप्नुयात्कामी प्रजार्थी प्राप्नुयात्प्रजाम् ॥ ४॥
Dharmārthī prāpnuyād-dharmam-arthārthī cārtha-māpnuyāt.
Kāmāna-vāpnuyāt-kāmī prajārthī prāpnuyāt-prajām. (4)

Whoever desires dharma attains dharma, wealth attains wealth, love attains love, and one desiring children is blessed with children.

भक्तिमान् यः सदोत्थाय शुचिस्तद्गतमानसः ।
सहस्रं वासुदेवस्य नाम्नामेतत्प्रकीर्तयेत् ॥ ५॥
Bhaktimān yaḥ sadot-thāya śucis-tadgata-mānasaḥ (ha),
Sahasraṁ vāsudevasya nām-nāmetat-prakīrtayet. (5)

One who rises every day with devotion and chants these names becomes blessed with fame, fortune, and auspiciousness.

यशः प्राप्नोति विपुलञ् ज्ञातिप्राधान्यमेव च ।
अचलां श्रियमाप्नोति श्रेयः प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम् ॥ ६॥
Yaśaḥ prāpnoti vipulañ jñāti-prādhānya-meva ca,
Acalāṁ śriya-māpnoti śreyaḥ prāpnot-yanut-tamam. (6)

Such a devotee becomes fearless, strong, healthy, beautiful, and virtuous.

न भयङ् क्वचिदाप्नोति वीर्यन् तेजश्च विन्दति ।
भवत्यरोगो द्युतिमान् बलरूपगुणान्वितः॥ ७॥
Na bhayaṅ kvacidāpnoti vīryan tejaśca vindati,
Bhavatya-rogo dyutimān balarūpa-guṇān-vitaḥ (ha). (7)

By reciting with love, all misfortunes and sins are destroyed, and great blessings are gained.

रोगार्तो मुच्यते रोगाद्बद्धो मुच्येत बन्धनात् ।
भयान्मुच्येत भीतस्तु मुच्येतापन्न आपदः ॥ ८॥
Rogārto mucyate rogād-baddho mucyeta bandhanāt,
Bhayān-mucyeta bhītastu mucyetā-panna āpadaḥ (ha). (8)

The sick are cured, the bound are freed, the frightened gain courage, and the troubled find relief.

दुर्गाण्यतितरत्याशु पुरुषः पुरुषोत्तमम् ।
स्तुवन्नामसहस्रेण नित्यं भक्तिसमन्वितः ॥ ९॥
Durgāṇyatita-ratyāśu puruṣaḥ puruṣottamam,
Stuvan-nāma-sahasreṇa nityaṁ bhakti-saman-vitaḥ (ha). (9)

Whoever takes refuge in Viṣṇu by these names crosses all dangers and difficulties.

वासुदेवाश्रयो मर्त्यो वासुदेवपरायणः ।
सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा याति ब्रह्म सनातनम् ॥ १०॥
Vāsudevāśrayo martyo vāsudeva-parāyaṇaḥ (ha),
Sarvapāpa-viśud-dhātmā yāti brahma sanātanam. (10)

Devotees of Vāsudeva are purified of all sins and attain eternal peace.

न वासुदेवभक्तानामशुभं विद्यते क्वचित् ।
जन्ममृत्युजराव्याधिभयं नैवोपजायते ॥ ११॥
Na vāsudeva-bhaktānām-aśubhaṁ vidyate kvacit,
Janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi-bhayaṁ naivo-pajāyate. (11)

Fear of birth, death, disease, and old age never troubles one who adores Vāsudeva.

इमं स्तवमधीयानः श्रद्धाभक्तिसमन्वितः ।
युज्येतात्मसुखक्षान्तिश्रीधृतिस्मृतिकीर्तिभिः ॥ १२॥
Imaṁ stavam-adhīyānaḥ śraddhā-bhakti-samanvitaḥ (ha),
Yujyetātma-sukha-kṣānti-śrīdhṛti-smṛti-kīrtibhiḥ (hi). (12)

The chanter of these names gains peace, joy, patience, memory, fame, and brilliance.

न क्रोधो न च मात्सर्यन् न लोभो नाशुभा मतिः ।
भवन्ति कृत पुण्यानां भक्तानां पुरुषोत्तमे ॥ १३॥
Na krodho na ca mātsaryan na lobho nāśubhā matiḥ (hi),
Bhavanti kṛta-puṇyānāṁ bhaktānāṁ puruṣottame. (13)

In the heart of Viṣṇu’s devotee, anger, jealousy, greed, and evil thoughts do not remain.

द्यौः सचन्द्रार्कनक्षत्रा खन् दिशो भूर्महोदधिः ।
वासुदेवस्य वीर्येण विधृतानि महात्मनः ॥ १४॥
Dyau sacandrārka-nakṣatrā khan diśo bhūrmaho-dadhiḥ (hi),
Vāsudevasya vīryeṇa vidhṛtāni mahātmanaḥ (ha). (14)

By Viṣṇu’s power, the sun, moon, stars, directions, earth, and oceans are sustained.

ससुरासुरगन्धर्वं सयक्षोरगराक्षसम् ।
जगद्वशे वर्ततेदङ् कृष्णस्य सचराचरम् ॥ १५॥
Sasurā-sura-gandharvaṁ sayakṣor-agarākṣasam,
Jagad-vaśe vartatedaṅ kṛṣṇasya sacarā-caram. (15)

All beings—moving and unmoving, devas, asuras, yakṣas, gandharvas, and serpents—exist by His will.

इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिः सत्त्वन् तेजो बलन् धृतिः ।
वासुदेवात्मकान्याहुः क्षेत्रङ् क्षेत्रज्ञ एव च ॥ १६॥
Indriyāṇi mano buddhiḥ sattvan tejo balan dhṛtiḥ (hi),
Vāsudevāt-makān-yāhuḥ, kṣetraṅ kṣetrajña eva ca. (16)

Even the senses, mind, intellect, strength, courage, and brilliance are His manifestations.

सर्वागमानामाचारः प्रथमं परिकल्पते ।
आचारप्रभवो धर्मो धर्मस्य प्रभुरच्युतः ॥ १७॥
Sarvā-gamānā-mācāraḥ prathamaṁ pari-kalpate,
Ācāra-prabhavo dharmo dharmasya prabhur-acyutaḥ (ha). (17)

Dharma begins with proper conduct, and Viṣṇu Himself is the master of dharma.

ऋषयः पितरो देवा महाभूतानि धातवः ।
जङ्गमाजङ्गमञ् चेदञ् जगन्नारायणोद्भवम् ॥ १८॥
Ṛṣayaḥ pitaro devā mahā-bhūtāni dhātavaḥ (ha),
Jaṅgamā-jaṅgamañ cedañ jagan-nārāyaṇod-bhavam. (18)

Ṛṣis, ancestors, devas, the elements, and all beings have their origin in Nārāyaṇa.

योगो ज्ञानन् तथा साङ्ख्यं विद्याः शिल्पादिकर्म च ।
वेदाः शास्त्राणि विज्ञानमेतत्सर्वन् जनार्दनात् ॥ १९॥
Yogo jñānan tathā sānkhyaṁ vidyāḥ śilpādi-karma ca,
Vedāḥ śāstrāṇi vijñāna-metat-sarvan janārdanāt. (19)

Yoga, Sāṅkhya, knowledge, arts, sciences, Vedas, and wisdom all arise from Him.

एको विष्णुर्महद्भूतं पृथग्भूतान्यनेकशः ।
त्रींल्लोकान्व्याप्य भूतात्मा भुङ्क्ते विश्वभुगव्ययः ॥ २०॥
Eko viṣṇur-mahad-bhūtaṁ pṛthag-bhūtānya-nekaśaḥ (ha),
Trīn-lokān-vyāpya bhūtātmā bhuṅkte viśva-bhuga-vyayaḥ (ha). (20)

The One Viṣṇu appears as many, pervading all worlds, yet He remains eternal.

इमं स्तवं भगवतो विष्णोर्व्यासेन कीर्तितम् ।
पठेद्य इच्छेत्पुरुषः श्रेयः प्राप्तुं सुखानि च ॥ २१॥
Imaṁ stavaṁ bhagavato viṣṇor-vyāsena kīrtitam,
Paṭhedya icchet-puruṣaḥ śreyaḥ prāptuṁ sukhāni ca. (21)

This stotra of Viṣṇu, composed by Vyāsa, when recited with devotion, bestows supreme joy and auspiciousness.

विश्वेश्वरमजन् देवञ् जगतः प्रभुमव्ययम् ।
भजन्ति ये पुष्कराक्षन् न ते यान्ति पराभवम् ॥ २२॥
न ते यान्ति पराभवम् ॐन् नम इति
Viśveśvara-majan devañ jagataḥ prabhu-mavyayam,
Bhajanti ye puṣka-rākṣan na te yānti parā-bhavam. (22)
Na te yānti parā-bhavam on nama iti.

Those who adore the Lotus-eyed Lord never face defeat or downfall.

अर्जुन उवाच—
पद्मपत्रविशालाक्ष पद्मनाभ सुरोत्तम ।
भक्तानामनुरक्तानान् त्राता भव जनार्दन ॥ २३॥
Arjuna uvāca:
Padma-patra-viśālākṣa padma-nābha surottama,
Bhaktānām-anurak-tānān trātā bhava janārdana. (23)

Arjuna prays: “O Lotus-eyed Lord, eternal protector of devotees, always be our savior.”

श्रीभगवानुवाच—
यो मान् नामसहस्रेण स्तोतुमिच्छति पाण्डव ।
सोहऽमेकेन श्लोकेन स्तुत एव न संशयः ॥ २४॥
स्तुत एव न संशय ॐन् नम इति ।
Śrī bhagavānuvāca:
Yo mān nāma-sahasreṇa stotu-micchati pānḍava,
Soha-mekena ślokena stuta eva na saṁśayaḥ (ha). (24)
Stuta eva na saṃśaya on nama iti 

Bhagavān replies: “Even chanting one verse with love equals reciting the thousand names completely.”

व्यास उवाच—
वासनाद्वासुदेवस्य वासितं भुवनत्रयम् ।
सर्वभूतनिवासोऽसि वासुदेव नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ २५॥
श्री वासुदेव नमोऽस्तुत ॐन् नम इति ।
Vyāsa uvāca:
Vāsanād-vāsudevasya vāsitaṁ bhuvana-trayam,
Sarva-bhūtani-vāsosi vāsudeva namostu te. (25)
śrīvāsudeva namostuta on nama iti.

Vyāsa prays: “By Your fragrance, O Vāsudeva, all the worlds are filled. Unto You I bow down.”

पार्वत्युवाच —
केनोपायेन लघुना विष्णोर्नामसहस्रकम् ।
पठ्यते पण्डितैर्नित्यं श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं प्रभो ॥ २६॥
Pārvatyuvāca:
Keno-pāyena laghunā viṣṇor-nāma-sahasrakam,
Paṭhyate panḍitair-nityaṁ śrotu-micchām-yahaṁ prabho. (26)

Pārvatī asks Śiva: “Is there a simple way to chant these thousand names daily?”

ईश्वरउवाच—
श्रीराम राम रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे ।
सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं राम नाम वरानने ॥ २७॥
श्रीरामनाम वरानन ॐन् नम इति ।
īśvara uvāca:
Śrīrāma rāma rāmeti rame rāme manorame,
Sahasranāma-tat-tulyaṁ rāmanāma varānane. (27)
(Chant this shloka 3 times)
Śrī rāmanāma varānana on nama iti.

Śiva replies: “Chanting ‘Śrī Rāma Rāma Rāma’ is equal to the thousand names of Viṣṇu.”

ब्रह्मोवाच—
नमोऽस्त्वनन्ताय सहस्रमूर्तये सहस्रपादाक्षिशिरोरुबाहवे ।
सहस्रनाम्ने पुरुषाय शाश्वते सहस्रकोटियुगधारिणे नमः ॥ २८॥
सहस्रकोटियुगधारिणे ॐन् नम इति ।
Brahmovāca:
Namo-stvanan-tāya sahasra-mūrtaye, sahasra-pādāk-ṣiśiro-rubāhave,
Sahasra-nāmne puruṣāya śāśvate, sahasra-koṭi-yuga-dhāriṇe namaḥ (ha). (28)
sahasra-koṭi-yuga-dhāriṇe on nama iti.

Brahmā prays: “Salutations to the Infinite Lord of countless forms, names, and ages, who sustains the universe.”

सञ्जय उवाच—
यत्र योगेश्वरः कृष्णो यत्र पार्थो धनुर्धरः ।
तत्र श्रीर्विजयो भूतिर्ध्रुवा नीतिर्मतिर्मम ॥ २९॥
Sanjaya uvāca:
Yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ (ha),
Tatra śrīr-vijayo bhūtir-dhruvā nītir-matir-mama. (29)

Sañjaya says: “Wherever Kṛṣṇa, the Lord of Yoga, and Arjuna stand, there abide victory, prosperity, and righteousness.”

श्रीभगवानुवाच—
अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो माञ् ये जनाः पर्युपासते ।
तेषान् नित्याभियुक्तानाञ् योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम् ॥ ३०॥
Śrībhagavānuvāca:
Ananyāś-cinta-yanto māñ, ye janāḥ paryupāsate,
Teṣān nityābhi-yuktānāñ, yogakṣemaṁ vahām-yaham. (30)

Bhagavān declares: “I protect what My devotees have, and I grant what they lack.”

परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् ।
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे ॥ ३१॥
Pari-trāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām,
Dharma-saṁsthā-panārthāya saṁbha-vāmi yuge yuge. (31)

“To protect the good, destroy evil, and establish dharma, I manifest age after age.”

आर्ताः विषण्णाः शिथिलाश्च भीताः घोरेषु च व्याधिषु वर्तमानाः ।
सङ्कीर्त्य नारायणशब्दमात्रं विमुक्तदुःखाः सुखिनो भवन्तु ॥ ३२॥
Ārtā viṣaṇṇāḥ śithilāśca bhītāḥ, ghoreṣu ca vyādhiṣu vartamānāḥ|
Sankīrtya nārāyaṇa-śabda-mātraṁ, vimukta-duḥkhāḥ sukhino bhavantu| (32)

Even the weak, sorrowful, or frightened—if they sing His names with love—are protected by Viṣṇu.

कायेन वाचा मनसेन्द्रियैर्वा बुद्ध्यात्मना वा प्रकृतेः स्वभावात् ।
करोमि यद्यत् सकलं परस्मै नारायणायेति समर्पयामि ॥ ३३॥
Kāyena vācā mana-sendriyairvā, budhyātmanā vā prakṛteḥ svabhāvāt|
Karomi yadyat sakalaṃ parasmai, nārāyaṇā-yeti samar-payāmi| (33)

Whoever chants this Sahasranāma with devotion attains peace, prosperity, happiness, and finally, the eternal abode of Śrī Hari.

इतिश्रीविष्णोर्दिव्यसहस्रनामस्तोत्रंसम्पूर्णम्।
ॐन् तत्सत्।
Iti śrī-viṣṇor-divya-sahasranāma-stotraṃ sampūrṇam.
